VITAMIN D, 25-HYDROXY TEST - Results 22

by Tama

I recently had lab work done on my Vitamin D Level. I just got them back today and the doctor told me that it was 22, which is a very low normal range and it should be between 20 and 100, preferably closer to 40. She advise me to take vitamin D3 {cholecalciferol} 2000 u/day. She also stated that low V-D level may be associated with increased progression of arthritis, risk of diabetes, high blood pressure and possibly some cancers.

I actually saw my Primary doctor back in January and she stated that it was low {16} and she prescribe me Ergocalciferol 50,000 {take 1 per week for 8 weeks}. I'm just so surprised that my primary doctor didn't even follow up after I had took all of the medication.

I'm actually going to an acupuncturist and she's the one that order a test, she feels that I have a liver deficiency. Is this something to be worried about? She stated that it's nothing to be concerned, but to see what she listed that could be associated with startled and concerned me. Is there's something that I should follow up with or to ask?

Thank you so much for your assistance.

I'm always concerned about it...

Hi Tama,

Since you wrote this on the pages on Fibromyalgia, I'm assuming that you also have Fibromyalgia? Either way, you've stated your concern about the long term effects of low vitamin d levels, so you should read my pages on:

Vitamin D and Fibromyalgia

Multiple Sclerosis and Vitamin D

Breast Cancer and Vitamin D

Vitamin D and Chronic Pain

and I could go on and on about the long term effects that vitamin d deficiency could have on you. Essentially, I am concerned about my vitamin d intake on a week to week basis as I'm always thinking about my intake because I know so well the long term health benefits it can have.

So, yes, you SHOULD be concerned about a low vitamin d level, but I would NOT recommend that you get your level up to 40 ng/ml- but even HIGHER. Please take a look at my page on what an 'optimal' Vitamin D Level is.

You should also read my page on Vitamin D Deficiency Treatment because your intake of 2000 IU's is completely inadequate and is even too low for a MAINTENANCE dose for a 10 year old child!!

So, yes, while your doctor SHOULD have checked your level again, you now know that vitamin d is NOT a medication, but a NUTRIENT- and you MUST get nutrients for life.

But also JUST getting your vitamin d level up is NOT going to be good enough if you have fibromyalgia- and it may not even WORK... So, let me know if you got this and have any questions and if you have Fibromyalgia.

VITAMIN D IS LOW
by: AL

Hi Im very concerned about my levels of vitamin d. My levels have been low for years, as low as 14. Now my doctor has me taking 50,000iu once a week and I am getting really weird side effects such as tingling in my liver area.I also have muscle twitching. I have only been on the vitamin d for about 4 weeks my levels are around 22 at this point.

Vitamin D Side Effects
by: Kerri Knox, RN

Please see my page on Vitamin D Side Effects page to see why you are almost certainly magnesium deficient and probably have multiple other vitamin deficiencies that are contributing to your vitamin D side effects. I recommend getting the

Vitamin D Absorption Pack in order to get the amount of magnesium, trace vitamins and minerals, vitamin A, and Vitamin K that have been shown to both effectively allow vitamin d levels to rise, as well as helping to prevent Vitamin D Side Effects.
