Chronic Fatigue and Vitamin D Deficiency

by Heather
(Albuquerque, NM, USA)

I found your site because I googled my Vitamin D levels. I have a level of 6. I have been diagnosed with Epstein Barr, Chronic Fatigue, possible MS, and now this. Could this be the underlying factor of all of this?

I also have been suffering with depression most of my life and was born with a milk allergy, which I grew out of, but I still have issues with lactose.I

Could you please point me in the right direction. My doctor had me go purchase a Vitamin D3 supplement, 1000 IUs which I double and take once a day. Once that supplement is finished, I would like to purchase the one here.

Thanks!

Heather

I also have diverticulitis, which is quite bad at times.

Lots of thoughts..

Hi Heather,

So, while your issues are complicated, I do believe that Vitamin D Deficiency has CONTRIBUTED to many of your problems, please don't expect it to be the magic bullet that 'fixes' you.

So, first of all, you will NEVER bring your levels up with 2000 IU's per day. That is a MAINTENANCE Vitamin D Dosage for a 25 pound CHILD and will NOT treat SEVERE deficiency in an adult!!

Please read my Vitamin D Deficiency Treatment page and you'll see that, really, you should be taking about 10,000 IU's per day. Even at that dosage, it will likely take you a while to get your levels up!

Next, if you actually want to solve some of your problems, then you need to understand that it's EXTREMELY likely that you still probably have a milk allergy- you just don't break out in a rash. Milk allergy is VERY common and pasteurized, homogenized milk is simply a bad for you 'processed food' equivalent to eating white bread as far as nutrition is concerned.

Please take a look at the Weston A Price Foundation's Campaign for Real Milk to see why non-raw milk should not really be considered food. You would do best to avoid it completely. There is just no good reason to be using milk if you have chronic health problems and you have 'issues' with it. I'm SURE that it is contributing to your problems.

The other thing is that it's VERY likely that you have Gluten Sensitivity and Leaky Gut Syndrome as well.

Your MS symptoms and chronic fatigue could ALSO be due to severe Vitamin B12 Deficiency symptoms- even if your doctor has tested you and told you that it's 'normal'. It's likely NOT normal.

There are LOTS of other things that are likely to help that your doctor is NEVER going to look for or to suggest to you.

Rheumatoid Arthritis
by: Anonymous

I was just diagnosed with RA and one of the many lab tests revealed that I have a Vitamin D deficiency. My Rheumatologist prescribed, among anti-inflammatory drugs, a high dose of Vitamin D and Fish Oil Supplements .. Your thoughts?

Thank you!

RA and Vitamin D
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

If you have RA, then Fish Oil Supplements are a great start...but if he 'prescribed' you Vitamin D then you should not take it.

Prescription Vitamin D is NOT recommended. Instead, you should replace that with the amount recommended on the Vitamin D Deficiency Treatment page and don't rely on your doctor having given you the correct dosage.

Then, giving you antiinflammatories and vitamin d is really only a first start. There is a REASON that you have RA and taking fish oil with help, but it doesn't address the CAUSE of it.

The underlying cause of EVERY autoimmune disease nearly always has Increased Intestinal Permeability which nearly always is due to some degree of Gluten Sensitivity.

And while your doctor will give you some immunosuppressant medications, the Side Effects of Remicade and other drugs used in RA can lead to serious brain and spinal cord infections and rare fungal infections that are usually only seen in AIDS patients.

But there ARE other choices. The connection between Gluten Sensitivity and Rheumatoid Arthritis is very strong.

And over at the Arthritis Trust they claim that up to 80% of people with RA recover following their suggestions!!

And the folks who run The Gerson Therapy program claim great success with people overcoming and even reversing Rheumatoid Arthritis.

So, now that you know that there are alternatives, you have to make a choice. Do you want to continue to have RA- or do you want to work towards being free of this disease...

low on vit.D
by: Cara

I just got back my blood test results and my doctor said I was very low on vitamin D,so she gave me a perscription for it.I read in one of your comments to someone else that you shouldn't take a perscription for it?

I am also wondering if my low levels could have contributed to me having depression problems for years!Wondering what your thoughts are on that?

Thanks,Cara

Yes, Depression and Vitamin D are strongly linked
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

Hi Cara,

Yes, your low vitamin d could absolutely be contributing to your depression, and in many of the studies that have been done on vitamin d, one of the consistent findings in the studies was that the main 'side effect' of taking vitamin d was improved mood.

And seasonal affective disorder may simply be a lack of vitamin d along with some other Benefits of Sunlight that you might experience.

But you certainly may want to reconsider taking that Prescription Vitamin D and simply get a good quality Vitamin D3 Supplement instead.

Hope this helps.

When a phrase is underlined and in blue on a website, such as it is in the comment below and in this phrase Prescription Vitamin D, then you can click on that and it takes you to a page with more information on the subject in the phrase.

There's lots of information on that page and on the Vitamin D3 page to tell you why you should not take prescription vitamin d.

20 yrs of autoimmune unknown with decline in function
by: Elizabeth

20 yrs ago, I treated a child actively shedding CMV. Within 1 month, I was ill. High fever, mouth sores, swollen glands, swollen joints, weight loss, muscle weakness. Dx was Epstein Bar, later dx was autoimmune (ANA 1:640). Later they identified a speckled pattern, but no lupus or RA factor. 5 yrs later they dx'd Sjogrens, ultimately questioned MS, and finally just called this undifferentiated autoimmune disorder with secondary Sjogrens.

In the last 3 years, I have noted mental decline. I have a PhD and am a researcher. My short term memory was failing and I felt in a mental fog, inclusive of depression and with tremors. Any attempt at exercise back-fired, so I was increasingly unable to manage symptoms. Recently Vit D was 8; Vit B12 was 143. D supplementation has started and B12 shots.

I just eliminated gluten from my diet and within 5 days, the mental fogginess was gone. Problem now is that I have suddenly developed a persistent arrhythmia (clustered PACs). Any thoughts?

Yes. You need magnesium...
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

Hi Elizabeth,

YES!! You are probably magnesium deficient- despite the fact that you have probably had a normal Magnesium Level. Magnesium blood tests are worthless and should not be trusted.

Also, since you are taking vitamin d, please read my page on Magnesium and Vitamin D to see why taking high doses of vitamin d will 'use up' magnesium and lead to symptoms of magnesium deficiency in those who already have 'latent' magnesium deficiency.

Therefore Heart Palpitations are a common problem when taking vitamin d if you fail to take magnesium with it...
