Benefits of higher intake of magnesium...

by Trevor
(UK)

A scientist in the 1950,s Dr Reich found that in

voluntary tests done with patients with quite serious diseases and illnesses that giving them higher daily dosages of magnesium and other minerals and vitamins that after only a few weeks there was a marked improvement in their illnesses.

I,m a diabetic on insulin and have gone from no magnesium supplement to 305mg a day together with other mineral and multi vitamin supplements. My question is how long does it take the body to use the magnesium when taken and is it safe to slowly increase to 450mg of magnesium a day.

ANSWER:

Hi Trevor,

Everyone's needs are very different for nutrients and Carolyn Dean, author of The Magnesium Miracle herself takes over 1000 mg per day, every day with no ill effects.

She suggests that it is safe to take as much as needed in order to reduce symptoms (IF you have healthy kidney function) up until the point that you get loose stools, then either:

Reduce your dosage slightly

OR

Take the same amount, but increase the FREQUENCY with which you take smaller doses.

But, if you are a diabetic, it is not likely that JUST magnesium is going to help you entirely. You live in the UK and so it's VERY likely that you have Vitamin D Deficiency- maybe
even very severe.

And it's likely that you are deficient in some, if not many, other vitamins and minerals that your doctor is not going to be able to measure or to tell you about.

So, it would be MUCH closer to Dr. Reich's approach to take a High Quality Whole Food Multivitamin. This one, in particular, has 500 mg of magnesium and 5000 IU's of Vitamin D with B complex and lots of trace elements.

Most people in western countries want to supplement with ONE thing because they want to see if THAT is their problem. But most of the time, they do not have ONE nutritional deficiency and therefore supplementing with ONE thing will not help.

So, consider supplementing with a High Quality, Professional Strength Multivitamin. NOT a 'drug store' brand.

So, think of it in a WHOLE way. You didn't get into the situation that you are in simply by a lack of magnesium, so to get OUT of your situation, you will need to replace a whole lot of nutrients and change the way that you are eating and living.

A really good multivitamin is a good start, and so is the nutritional typing test. Let that be your starting point to better health.

I FEEL SO TIRED ALL THE TIME

Lots of things..
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

Hi again Trevor,

If you are having loose stools from the magnesium, then do one of two things:

1) FIRST- try taking the magnesium more FREQUENTLY throughout the day so that you are taking the same AMOUNT of magnesium TOTAL, but you are taking it, for instance, in 4 doses throughout the day rather than 2

2) If you are still having loose stools, then decrease the total amount that you are taking and see the Epsom Salt Uses page to see how to take an Epsom Salt Magnesium bath.

You DEFINITELY need to get your doctor to get you a vitamin D Level Trevor (Do you know what the name of the test was that was a level of 3?). It's VERY likely that you are vitamin D deficient.

What about Omega 3 Fatty Acid Supplements? Most people are very deficient in Omega 3 fatty acids and they can also help mood as well.

And how about exercise? Exercise is really one of the best ways to improve mood and overall help one's health in so many ways.

Get a Vitamin D Level
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

Hi Trevor,

I'm sorry to hear about your recent troubles. That's enough to bring anyone down. But I STILL think that you should get a vitamin D level. Unless you are taking 5000 IU's per day of Vitamin D, then it's likely that you are deficient and could stand to 'fill up your tank' a bit.

Take a look at the Vitamin D Requirements page and you'll see that an adult male needs a LOT of Vitamin D!!

And there is a STRONG connection between Vitamin D and mood, so please get a Vitamin D Level!

magnesium and vitamin d
by: adrian horner

Hi Kerri,

i,m a friend of Trevor's and I'm increasing my magnesium and vitamin d intake each day and encouraging trevor to do the same.

Energy levels are increasing and my sense of alertness too.

PLEASE CAN YOU HELP WITH THIS PROBLEM!

I suffer with the sciatic nerve and pains in my left leg when I go to bed.

PLEASE ADVISE ME
THANKS

Sciatic Pain
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

Hi Adrian,

So sorry to hear about your problems too! Sounds like you two are having a tough time of it..

Well, like I told Trevor, definitely get a Vitamin D Level. You guys there in the UK just don't get enough Vitamin D, and while you are taking SOME, you've really got to know what your level is, otherwise you are going to leave yourself Vitamin D Deficient and 'think' that the Vitamin D won't work.

It MIGHT work, but you have to get your levels up into the Optimal Vitamin D Range in order to know for sure.

And keep up with the magnesium, that's a great one for back pain- and at the worst, it will help to keep you 'regular' and loosen up any of the tight muscles that might be contributing to the sciatic nerve pain. Take a look at the Epsom Salt Uses page for a cheap magnesium 'boost'.

I also urge you to take a look at the Lose the Back Pain Treatment System. These guys are the EXPERTS in treating back pain and sciatica and are likely to be able to really help you out.

But keep up the Vitamin D and Magnesium to rule out any nutritional issues, but also take a look at the Lose the Back Pain guys. They really know what they are doing and they are your best bet to help get rid of sciatic nerve pain.

STARTING TO FEEL CONSIDERABLY BETTER
by: Trevor Stroud

Dear Kerri,

I love reading your column and indeed
your recommendations,since taking extra magnesium
and VITAMIN D,my sleep is better and my overall
feel good factor feels better.

I would like to
know how to Build My Own Website one day but I have no idea how to do it. I'm probably too thick, but I'm going to keep looking at your site.

YOU'VE GOT A BRILLIANT WAY OF HELPING AND UPLIFTING PEOPLE,KEEP UP THE BRILLIANT WORK
CAN YOU HELP WITH THIS PROBLEM I'M ON INSULIN BUT THE BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS ARE VERY HARD TO GET LOW ENOUGH, I'M ALWAYS IN TROUBLE WITH MY DOCTOR OVER IT.

Blood sugar levels
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

Hi Trevor,

Well, the Vitamin D and magnesium could help somewhat with that. (Did you get a Vitamin D Level yet? -Be sure to bug your doctor.) There are a LOT of supplements that can help with blood sugar, but the very first thing that you could do to help with your blood sugar is to clean up your diet.

If you are eating ANY processed foods, white flours or sugar in any form, that is going to contribute to poor blood sugar control. White rice, white flour pastas, the biscuit that your doctor gave you- all terrible for blood sugar.

So, my recommendation is to completely clean up your diet of all processed foods or simple sugars in any form. If you are saying, "What, what do I eat then?", then it's likely that you are going to need some help.

So, if you are going to need help because it's going to be a big change for you, then here is my recommendation.

** Download The Healthy Urban Kitchen. This ebook will walk you through the steps on how to eat nothing but whole, good for you foods that can really make a big difference in your health and your blood sugar.

They also will send you a whole bunch of recipes and meal plans so that you are not alone and you have support in knowing what it is you are supposed to eat and how you are supposed to do it. It really is a great book with a great program to help you out with a new way of eating.

Jigsaw Health Magnesium Is for Movement Video

**Next recommendation is to get on Jigsaw Health's Essential Daily Packs. This one contains 500 mg of Magnesium, 5000 IU's of Vitamin D, Vitamin E, Selenium and lots of other things that I recommend that EVERYONE with health problems get. I've done a lot of research on multivitamins and this one just continues to keep impressing me more and more every time I do more research.

So, that's probably PLENTY of info for you for now. If you start cleaning up your diet and get on a High Quality Multivitamin, that will go a LONG way towards potentially improving your blood sugar problems.

Check back in with me a few weeks after you start and let me know how you are doing.

Vitamin D Level
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

Hi Pauline,

Thanks for having everyone come to my site. This is great!! OK, first of all, really really really try to get a Vitamin D Level. You just don't realize how important it is- and having low levels can contribute to SO many problems as I've written on my Symptoms of Vitamin D Deficiency page.

And if you are Vitamin D Deficient, the risk is that you are going to take WAY TOO LOW of an amount of Vitamin D to make a difference. You are a perfect case in point. You think that you are actually taking a lot, when you are likely taking SO MUCH LESS than you really need.

Take a look at my Vitamin D Requirements page and you'll see that you should really be taking more like 3800 to 5000 IU's!!

But also be sure that you are NOT getting that from your cod liver oil as there can be Problems with Taking Cod Liver Oil.

But, Pauline, living in the UK, it's likely that you are already Vitamin D Deficient anyway and so you may need to take much more Vitamin D than that to correct your deficiency, but you can't know unless you get a Vitamin D Test!! So, really please try to get one!!

And yes, you are absolutely right about the doctor giving his wards vitamin D and they didn't get the flu. I talk about it on my Vitamin D and Colds and Flu page.

You would be better off simply getting a much higher quality multivitamin supplement like Jigsaw Health's Essential Daily Packs that already has 5000 IU's of Vitamin D and 500 mg of magnesium in it. Getting everything that you need all in one product can really simplify things and end confusion about how much of what to take.

Vit d anxiety and magnesium
by: Mariela

Hi for the past 3 months out of nowhere I've been having anxiety problems and the worst for me are the physical symptoms a week ago my doctor told me my vit d level is 20 so she had me start vit d3 1000 daily and a multivitamin/ mineral daily I was doing research and it says to also take magnesium but I'm confused about what to take that is a safe dose?

I've gone over magnesium dosage a hundred times
by: Kerri Knox, Registered Nurse

Not sure why you are confused about magnesium dosages when I've gone over it a hundred times on my site if you would have just looked around, especially if you would have looked to the left and clicked on the 'magnesium' tab and read around a bit.

So, please go to my page on Magnesium Dosage for the answer.

Magnesium Levels Page
by: Kerri Knox, Registered Nurse

Please read my page on Magnesium Levels. Magnesium levels do NOT indicate whether or not you will benefit from higher intakes of magnesium or whether you are sufficient or not. What indicates whether you need magnesium or not are your symptoms.
