Pain while taking Vitamin D which gradually subsides

by Kathy

I was told to take 2,000 units of vit D3 by my physician (levels are low, have had some broken bones, etc). I experienced a lot of pain in what I thought was my kidney and my urine was very cloudy.

I went down to 1,000 units, but my recent bloodwork shows I am still very deficient. I found a blog that one person wrote saying something about the bone being spongy and as it was assimilating the D3 is would be uncomfortable, and then the pain would go away.

Stick with it. I cannot find that blog now, but thought I would ask you. I do have chronic pain, fibro, chronic fatigue, etc. Does the spongy bone theory make sense to you?

Thank you.

Spongy Bone Theory Makes Sense, but...
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

Hi Kathy,

Yes, the spongy bone theory makes sense. A 'demineralized' bone will take up a lot of extra calcium when you start taking vitamin d. This extra calcium also drags a lot of water into the collagen matrix of the bone which then swells and causes pain- kind of like the pain from a bone bruise. See the page on Pain While Taking Vitamin D.

But if your Vitamin D levels are low, taking 1000 to 2000 IU's per day is seriously ridiculous as that is a MAINTENANCE dose for a 2 year old!! So, not ONLY will it NOT bring your levels up, but it is going to drag out the pain forever because you'll never get fully mineralized to stop the pain.

So, you really should read the Vitamin D Deficiency Treatment page and following the instructions there. And then, since it sounds like your doctor is clueless about Vitamin D, you'll need to read the Vitamin D Requirements page to determine your maintenance dose once you get your Vitamin D Levels to the 'optimal range' as well.

Also, let me know if you are interested in attempting to find out WHY you have CFS, Fibro and Chronic Pain. Doctors just seem to give people these labels and tell them to go about their life in pain forever, but there ARE reasons why you have these diseases- doctors just don't look for them. I wrote a post about it entitled Fibromyalgia, Syndrome or Disease.

You do NOT have to spend the rest of your life with fatigue and pain! And don't let doctors tell you that you do.
