Magnesium and Calcium and Vitamin D
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

Hi Rick,

This is a really interesting situation- especially since you also have epilepsy. I'll explain why in a minute.

So, first of all, there is an interplay between calcium, magnesium and vitamin D where you have to have all 3 in order for muscles to fire correctly. Most people who eat even relatively well get enough calcium, but it's the magnesium and vitamin D that most people are missing.

And what's interesting about this is that there are studies showing the relationship between both magnesium deficiency and epilepsy and vitamin D deficiency and epilepsy!

and here's an interesting study showing that vitamin d levels are decreased in people who are taking anticonvulsant drugs A Comparative Study of the Relative Influence of Different Anticonvulsant Drugs, UV Exposure and Diet on Vitamin D and Calcium Metabolism in Out-Patients with Epilepsy

So, with all of that information- I HIGHLY suggest that you get a Vitamin D Level done. And please don't skip this part because it's SUPER important considering you are on anticonvulsants AND you live in Canada. Then follow the directions for Vitamin D Deficiency Treatment using Vitamin D3 Supplements and NOT Prescription Vitamin D.

Magnesium Blood Levels are not accurate, so don't bother. And in the meantime, it's very safe for you to try taking magnesium as per the recommendations on the Magnesium Dosage page.

But I suspect that this problem is not going to resolve entirely until you get your Vitamin D Deficiency fixed.

Rick, I hope that this helped and please come back and let us know what you found out!
