Vitamin D and Liver Function
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen

Hi Debi,

Can you give me more information about your liver function and what exactly you mean by "high liver function".

More About Vitamin D

As far as I know, there is no such thing as high liver function, but there are high liver Enzymes that are a result of POOR liver function.

So if you mean high liver enzymes, then the answer is that there may be a connection, although there has been VERY little research in this area.

Bile, the green substance produced in the liver that digests fats, actually activate 'Vitamin D receptors' in the liver and intestines. Vitamin D receptors are responsible for the expression of specific genes throughout the body. So, a malfunctioning liver Could lead to the genetic expression of specific diseases that are controlled by Vitamin D if a person is susceptible to them.

Also, Vitamin D helps to 'cool off' inflammation in the body, and liver disease is characterized by inflammation. One study on rats showed less inflammatory response to a liver injury when they received Vitamin D than rats that didn't get Vitamin D.

In addition to that, the biliary tract where the bile is produced is completely sterile. In other words, there are no germs present at all. It is kept that way, in part, due to the presence of a natural antibiotic called cathelicidin.

Guess where cathelicidin comes from? You guessed it, it is created during the process of the body making Vitamin D when sunlight strikes the skin.

But increased liver enzymes could be a very serious issue and some SERIOUS lifestyle modification should be happening if you do have elevated liver enzymes.

Since the primary function of the liver is to detoxify substances, your focus should be on getting rid of toxic substances that are entering your body- through your food, water, air, cleaning products and cosmetics.

I'd have to have much more information about you before I could possibly have any idea of that those lab tests mean.

Lab tests by themselves mean little without knowing something about the person that they came from..

Can you tell me what types of symptoms that you are having and what prompted your doctor to take those blood tests? Also, what is the TSH level?

My last set of tests showed my Vitamin D had gone down again to 13, my Doctor put me on a perscription of 4000 units of Vitamin D per day.

My liver function, while still in the normal range had gone up. I also suffer from Fibromyalgia which this Vitamin D factor seems to add to the symptoms.

The other part of all this is that there is a large amount of thyroid issues in my family so my thyroid was checked, because I did not hear back I believe it was normal.

Thanks for writing this!

The Dr. prescribed 50, 000 units of Vitamin D 1 capsule once a week for 12weeks and then 1 capsule every two weeks thereafter. I am concerned since I have some liver damage. Should I be taking this many units of Vitamin D?
