Get a Vitamin D Level..
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

Hi Melissa,

I would suggest that you INSIST that you get a Vitamin D Level from your doctor ASAP. 400 iu's and 1000 IU's are simply ridiculously low levels to be taking for a woman who is NOT pregnant, let alone for a woman who is pregnant and likely preparing for breast feeding.

More About Vitamin D

And Melissa, your baby will get ZERO vitamin D from you until YOUR vitamin d levels are optimal AND you are taking between 4000 to 6000 IU's of Vitamin D a day. Read on my blog why it's imperative for Mothers to Be to Get Their Vitamin D.

While I don't know WHY you would be getting so tired, I SUSPECT that it's because your body is activating SO MANY metabolic processes because of SEVERE deficiency that it is simply using up energy and nutrients to finally get your body to be doing what it is supposed to be doing.

So, really Melissa- INSIST that your doctor get you a vitamin D level. It's really THAT important!! While your doctor is right that Vitamin D lowers blood pressure, vitamin D does NOT lower blood pressure significantly after any one single dose like a blood pressure pill does.

Vitamin D will GRADUALLY lower blood pressure over a long period of time ONLY IN PEOPLE WITH HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE. It corrects imbalances that cause high blood pressure and it doesn't simply lower blood pressure in people with normal or low blood pressure already. So your doctor really has no idea what he's talking about. And that shows from him having you take 1000 IU's of vitamin D when it's more likely that you need between 4000 to 8000 IU's per day with your increased needs from pregnancy.

Kerri,
Thank you so much for getting back to me so quickly. I did have my levels tested and it came back as 26. Does this number still support your thesis that I'm so low that it doesn't know what to do with the 400 to 800 IU's?

thanks
melissa yoak

p.s.

My doctor actually wanted to start me on 50,000 IU's a week but I was actually concerned about it and did not start it because I was having the drowsiness just by taking the lower dose I had been on. And I am preparing to breast feed so I am concerned about what to do at this point.

Hmmmm....

Hi Melissa,

Well, 26 is certainly low, but not extraordinarily low. However, some of my clients have had EXTREME Symptoms of Vitamin D Deficiency with levels even higher than that. So, I'm not sure whether it supports my hypothesis or not, but I'm VERY confident that this sleepiness is not DANGEROUS to you, just uncomfortable.

So, if you take 400 IU's and get extraordinarily sleepy, I doubt that you would feel WORSE if you took higher doses, so taking the 50,000 IU's all at once, might be a great idea and get it over with all at once.

So, here's what you might try if you are up for it and willing to see if the higher doses make you feel more sleepy.

DON'T take your prescription, but get some good Vitamin D 3 Supplements. If you don't want to take so many pills, you can sign into Emerson Ecologics in my Clients Only Area and use the Password

On the FIRST page of products, scroll down and you'll find a product called Liqui D3. It has 2000 IU's per DROP.

When you get it, you can take ONE FULL DROPPERFULL, which is about 75,000 IU's- or you can figure out how much is 50,000 IU's if that makes you feel more comfortable and take all 50,000 IU's all at once RIGHT AFTER DINNER. Then if you are sleepy for 10 or 12 hours, it will be much more comfortable.

If you still get sleepy, but it's no worse than when you take 400 IU's, then you might want to consider just doing the 50,000 or 75,000 IU's per week- or even better, you could simply do 300,000 all at once and get it over with for 2 months at a time!!!

300,000 all at once is VERY safe and is effective for bringing up blood levels. I personally just take 150,000 IU's all at once- once a month, as does my partner. In fact, in Europe, doctors who actually care about the Vitamin D Levels of their nursing home patients will give them one dose of 600,000 IU's once a YEAR right before winter to keep their levels up all winter!!

So, you have some options to consider depending upon how you feel about risking the sleepiness.

PS. Have you been checked for anemia? You might also want to get checked for Vitamin B12 deficiency just to make sure that its not something else.
