Subtle Symptoms Years Before Getting Very Sick?

I have been having gut issues for a few years attributing it to tweaking my hormones. I have had belching, bloating, nausea, intolerance to fatty foods, poor appetite etc.It always seemed like I felt viral. In Feb. I weighed 112lbs and I have lost 8lbs as of June. I got horrific epigastric pain one night over Memorial Day Weekend and have had it since. Went to Dr and she suspects ulcer due to imbalance of gut flora. Have been taking probiotics for years. I have been waiting for almost 3 months to see GI. They are very booked up as it is a teaching hospital where I used to work as an RN. I called my PCP yesterday to order an H Pylori blood test as well as stool antigen as I can not continue like this. Will see GI on Sept 1. I am very concerned as I have tried to eat 3 meals with a lot of fish, whey protein shakes, veggies like okra which seem to help with the pain, but I am losing muscle mass and subcutaneous fat. I am usually very active and energetic. I am a cyclist but can't ride anymore. I am also very weak. I guess the main question again is can you be infected and it not manifest itself for years?

Thanks,

Elaine

Subtle Symptoms of H Pylori
by: Kerri Knox, RN The Immune System Queen

Hi Elaine,

Yep, you are correct, you can be infected for years or decades and have no symptoms or mild symptoms. In fact, the vast majority of people who have it have no symptoms at all. But in the background, the infection is stressing your immune system and causing gut inflammation. Many people can tolerate this just fine if they are otherwise healthy. It's a 'stress' on the body like any other, and some people tolerate stress better than others.

But if the inflammation continues and the body begins to tolerate it poorly, it can lead to Increased Intestinal Permeability which can lead to nutritional deficiencies, food allergies, and many other problems.

That is not to say that you DO have H pylori, only that you might. And you are right to get tested to find out. Be sure to read my book, The H Pylori Solution, if you test positive, as there are many specific tips, tricks, and options you have that your doctor is unlikely to talk to you about. And there are many things you can do in order to increase your odds of eradicating the bacteria the first time you attempt to get rid of it.
