Shocked to See that My Vitamin D Level is 13

I got my vitamin D level checked

I was quite shocked
I'm 22 years old female and vitamin D level is 13 ng/ml

It has been 3 months
I have started feeling more pain than before
I think I have insomnia
I cant sleep well
When I wakeup I'm cranky because I feel I just haven't slept at all.

Can you please tell me how should I start the Vitamin D Deficiency Treatment?

I'm really scared of getting Vitamin D Injections every week
kindly tell me what should I include in my diet and which supplements I should be taking so that I can feel better

Please let me know soon
Thanks :)

Can you Tell Me More About Your Symptoms..
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

So, first of all, you can stop worrying. You do NOT need to get Vitamin D Injections.

You can simply take over the counter Vitamin D Supplements at the dosage that is recommended on the Vitamin D Deficiency Treatment page.

Please make sure that you also make sure that you read the page on Magnesium and Vitamin D page to see why you should be taking magnesium with your vitamin d. And if you take a look at the Signs of Magnesium Deficiency, you'll see that a lot of your symptoms are actually likely to be due to magnesium deficiency.

And if you follow the instructions on the Magnesium Dosage page as well, then you'll probably feel a lot better.

I hope that this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Vit D of 13
by: Anonymous

I had a level of Vit D of 13,no one seem to care. When i went to my cancer Dr. his assistant put me on does of 50,000 units a week for 8 weeks. i fill like myself. I was having spells of filling like i was coming down with a virus. My joints and muscles hurt all the time. The doctor told me it was my medicine i was taking for breast CA. Once my Vit d level came up all the pain has left. And i don't have the fatigue .The best i have felt in 3 years. My level is now 44.

Help please

My doctor told me my body isn't retaining vitamin b and vitamin D so she has me on high dosages of vitamin b shots once a month and high dosages of vitamin D once a week. I went in originally because I thought my thyroid was off and I still think it is. The first time I took the vitamins I felt better but now I'm feeling tired, drained, have trouble focusing some days (not as bad as before but it's still a problem) moody, depression (sometimes) and weight gain. Did my doctor miss diagnos me? Is there something else I should check for?

I too have a Vit D level of 13!

I too have a level of 13 & am exhausted all of the time! My doctor put me on Ergocal Ciferol (Vit D2) 50,000 unit for 3 months! I have IBS symptoms (which are made much worse from low Vit D levels), get UTIs often (also a symptom), and have little energy for anything. I get muscle pains in various body parts. Concentration is difficult as you feel like your mind is in a cloud! I live in a sunny climate year round so you can imagine how low it would've been if I lived in a cold area! I've been on treatment for 3 weeks so far, and feel a little better but not as quickly as I would've expected. I've read that if you have Fibromyalgia that your level D nos. can be low, so I'm assuming that's partly from my Fibromyalgia & partly the Vit D deficiency. I don't have any side effects from the Vit D2 50,000 units so get a prescription for this and start feeling better! I don't completely agree with Kerri Knox about the Magnesium being the cause of your tiredness or taking regular Vit D supplements. It wouldn't hurt to increase your intake of magnesium (dark chocolates - yum, bananas, nuts, etc.). Since Vit D causes fatigue & exhaustion and you already know you're at a critically low point of 13, start there & get the 50,000 prescription. Normal levels of Vit D are between 30 - 100 with 70 being optimal. You won't get much help from the OTC Vitamin D supplements of 1,000 to 2,000 units since you're so low, so don't waste your money, your Vit D level needs to be brought up quickly! Good luck!

Please see my page on Vitamin D Therapy. You're not going to feel better in a couple of weeks if you have low vitamin D. Give it some time. 4-6 months!

44 yrs. old with a Vitamin D level of 13
by: Anonymous

About four months ago I felt like I woke up one morning and someone had thrown me down some stairs. I was in so much pain when I tried to get out of the bed. It was difficult to walk to the bathroom, couldn't bend over, barely could put my bra on. I felt like my muscles were weak, my neck, back, wrist would feel sore. I always would wake up at night...insomnia was terrible. I went to my PCP I thought I had Hypothyeriodism due to the muscle pain and joint weakness and tiredness. I was taking B12 in the moring to make it through the day. I was taking melotonin trying to sleep at night. Then taking Aleve muscle and back just to make it through the day. Finally in November I sent an appointment with my OB/GYN and told her the symptoms as I broke down crying three times in the office. I was so tiredness and drained I couldn't help myself.

The test came back and my Vitamin D level was 13 which didn't alarm me because I didn't know what was normal. Until the nurse told me!!! I was so shocked. I prided myself on being really healthly so, this was kinda dissappointing but, such a big relief that it isn't something more like my self diagnosis of Hypothyeriodism.

This page helped me so much, after reading it I am wondering if I need to be taking magnesium along with the Vitamin D prescribed by my physician...
