Wow, that's a great question. You've been doing your reading. So, the interplay between calcium, magnesium and vitamin d is as follows:


* Calcium will not be absorbed without Vitamin D. No matter how much you take, it will not be absorbed without adequate Vitamin D. Up to 20 times as much calcium is absorbed with adequate Vitamin D, than when you are deficient.

* Calcium is able to be 'dissolved' in the bloodstream in the presence of magnesium. Without magnesium, the calcium will stay 'crystallized' in the blood stream and get excreted out through the kidneys. This is one reason why people get kidney stones- lack of magnesium to get the calcium into solution in order to get absorbed. Needless to say, the body isn't able to absorb crystalline calcium as well as calcium dissolved into a solution.

* When Vitamin D is converted from supplements or sun on your skin into its 'active' form in your bloodstream, it REQUIRES a certain amount of calcium for the conversion.


Sooooo. Yes, Vitamin D 'negatively' affects magnesium, if you want to put it that way, because you'll likely need more magnesium if you are taking Vitamin D. Not everyone notices a difference, but so many people are magnesium deficient that those who are deficient can have PROFOUND pain, cramping, insomnia, constipation etc. from magnesium deficiency that is worsened by Vitamin D intake.

But I'm not sure where you got the information that Vitamin D will negatively affect bone reuptake. Vitamin D DEFICIENCY causes negative bone reuptake, SUFFICIENT Vitamin D prevents that.


So, DO get your Vitamin D rechecked and get it up into the 40 to 80 ng/ml range as per the guidelines on the Normal Vitamin D Levels page.

The amount of calcium that you are taking is fine. I never recommend more than 1000 mg unless specifically directed by your doctor because once you are getting magnesium and Vitamin D, you will actually absorb the calcium that you are getting and it will usually be adequate. The amount of magnesium that you are taking is pretty low, and because you are having Signs of Magnesium Deficiency in the form of PVC's, then you are DEFINITELY not taking enough.

You can nearly always consider yourself Magnesium Deficient IF you have symptoms. Blood testing is not an accurate way to figure out magnesium deficiency, so don't bother.





And magnesium needs change day to day, so even if you did the accurate Exatest that is outlined on the Magnesium Level page, and your level was normal, you could stay up and party all night and be deficient tomorrow- so symptoms are a much better indicator of magnesium status.
