H Pylori is Contagious?

by Andrea
(Dallas,TX USA)

Hi i recently went to the doctor and they told me i have h pylori, I'm on medication already which makes me feel horrible like I can't breath, dizzy and very weak... I'm very cocerned because I have a three year old daughter that is always with me.. She doesn't show any symptoms but I know I kissed her so many times without knowing I was infected with h pylori.

She takes vitamins everyday and she is very strong and healthy but I would hate for her to get infected as well, please let me know what I can do I would really appreciate it.. She is everything to me and if I can deal with this I can't imagine what it would be like for her.
Thank you

Hi Andrea,

You really need to relax about this. If you have H pylori, you've had it for years and have probably exposed her thousands of times already.

Half the population of the entire world has this and she's probably been exposed from dozens of other people- and if she hasn't yet, then she will be.

You'd have to put her in a bubble and never go out to eat or eat uncooked food if you want her to never be exposed to it. It's simply impossible to 'protect' her other than to keep her immune system in the best shape possible by not giving her processed foods, sugar etc.

Please do not stop kissing or holding your child for fear of giving her something. Stop worrying and live your life with your daughter and don't worry about giving her this bacteria- PLEASE!!!!

You arent answering the question

IS IT CONTAGIOUS? YES OR NO? My son showed the symptoms and I got it treated...no big deal. So I did some research and then the nurse told me "its not contagious, the mayo clinic is wrong" So now my other sons have been showing symptoms. I just want a STRAIGHT answer. If its contagious then our household should have been treated for it.

I've given a 'straight' answer a hundred times

I've given a 'straight answer' a hundred times on my site. Please see the page on Is H Pylori Contagious and the dozens of questions that I've answered at the bottom of that page, including the page entitled Must Read Answer About Questions Regarding H Pylori Being Contagious. And no, just because it's contagious does not mean that your household should have been treated for it. EVEN IF everyone in your family is infected, it does not mean that everyone should have been treated. H pylori is not 'that kind' of contagious illness. It is often asymptomatic, and it has even been shown to be somewhat beneficial, in many studies. The ONLY reason someone should be treated for H pylori is if they have chronic health issues.

Family members MAY need to be treated if the family member with chronic health issues continues to be reinfected with H pylori and their health is suffering for it. No one should be 'automatically' treated for H pylori simply because they have it- there needs to be a good reason to treat someone for this bacteria. And a huge % of people with this infection never show symptoms and it may even be protective for certain health issues.
