Can I Give My Patients H Pylori

by Melissa
(UK)

Hi I have been ill for quite some time suffering with digestive problems and pain under my ribcage. After some tests my results came back that i was anemiac had very low levels of vitamin D and positive for the H Pylori bacteria. I have been put on two antibiotics over a week. My concern is that I am at University doing my nurse training and currently on placement in A and E and im concerned whether I am putting my patients at risk seeing as their immune systems might be compromised.

Thanks

Melissa

Yes, but so can everyone else

Melissa,

I've covered this question dozens of times on this site. Sure, you could give them H pylori. But you could have for the entire time that you've been with them too.

Also, so can half of the staff of your hospital who are carriers, but who have no symptoms and have never been tested. Half the world has H pylori and most of them never have any symptoms.

So, unless your hospital has a policy that everyone caring for patients be tested for H pylori, then why do you think you are at higher risk of giving your patients H pylori than the rest of your staff that have it and just have not been tested?

AGAIN, as I've said on all of the other answers, stop worrying about it. H pylori is a BACTERIA, it's not a disease. Most of your patients probably already have it. And since there are ZERO hospitals in the world that require their staff to test and eradicate H pylori before they care for patients, and they have no policy for someone who knows they have H pylori, this is because NO HOSPITAL IS WORRIED ABOUT THIS, and for good reason. You should not either. It's not a disease, it's 'just' a bacteria. One that your patients have been exposed to thousands of times, and one they will be exposed to thousands of times more in their life.
