Babies and H Pylori

by Edna
(Texas)

I recently found out that my "heartburn and gastritis" was H. Pylori. I am worried that I might have passed it to my 18 month old baby since sometimes I feed her with my spoon or let her drink from my water bottle. How could I tell if she has the bacteria? Are there any tests for babies?

Thanks,
Edna

Hi Edna,

Of COURSE you hugged, kissed and touched your baby!! The only way that you can prevent exposing a baby to H pylori if you have it is to never kiss or touch them. This would have a FAR FAR worse long term outcome than exposing your baby to H pylori. So, PLEASE don't 'worry' that you exposed her- you did because you are a mother that loves her child and there is no way NOT to expose her.

She will also be exposed tens of thousands of times again in her life. If you want her to be protected from H pylori, rather than avoiding kissing her or feeding her with your spoon- it would be FAR better to avoid feeding her PROCESSED foods, sugar, white flour, artificial ANYTHING, soy products, pasteurized milk products, corn or foods made from corn, etc.

These foods will destroy her immune system and make her susceptible to getting H pylori and every other 'bug' that there is out there in the world.

You can test babies using the H Pylori Stool Test right in your home with no pain to her at all. But it's unlikely that you'll find any doctor to treat her if she is healthy and not experiencing any problems. And it's not necessarily a good idea to expose a baby to the high dose antibiotics that doctors would want to give her to get rid of the H pylori in the first place- so if she DOES have it, you'll have a tough decision to make.

Remember that half the WORLD has H pylori and just having H pylori is not necessarily a problem. It's when you have health problems that it becomes a problem. In fact, if your baby DOES have it, she is more of a threat to YOU because it's likely that she could transmit it back to you over and over again and you will think that your treatment is not working when, in fact, she is simply giving H pylori back to you.
