Does Vitamin D Help with Fertility?

Does Vitamin D Help with Fertility?

I was at the "girly doctor" for a regular check up because me and my husband have been having problems conceiving so I asked my doctor about alternative medicines.

She told me she would run some blood work to see about my vitamin levels. Well to make a long story short she called with the results and told me my vitamin d levels were really low and that could be causing our infertility because medically neither one of us has a problem but she said if your vitamin d levels are low it could make you ovulate less (not every month) and therefore decrease your chances of getting pregnant.

She recommended that I go to the store and pick up some vitamin d supplements. we both have been taking them for about a month (by the way we are taking 1000 ius) and I am happy to announce I just went to the doctor yesterday and I am pregnant!

Vitamin D and Fertility

Wow! That is great that you have a doctor who actually checked your vitamin D level simply for an infertility problem. Maybe I have hope for doctors...

While that is great, AND its great that you got pregnant, 1000 IU's may have simply got you over 'critical mass' of extreme deficiency to allow you to get pregnant- But 1000 IU's is simply NOT enough Vitamin D to:

1) Correct Vitamin D Deficiency
2) Supply enough vitamin D for you and your growing baby's needs

and this is EXTREMELY important because lack of vitamin D in utero has been linked to some SERIOUS problems. I've written a blog post on it called Mothers to Be, Better Get Your Vitamin D.

Not to mention that you will need AT LEAST 4000 IU's per day in order to even BEGIN to express Vitamin D in your milk when you are breast feeding.

So, PLEASE get your level rechecked soon so that you can realize that your vitamin D level has probably NOT been raised in the least by your 1000 IU's- and congratulations on your pregnancy.
