Could the Odd Smell from My Breath be H Pylori

by Randy
(CT)

I have a constant sweet smell, like that of fermenting fruit, in my nose. It's not on my body and no one, other than me can smell it. I recently had an endoscopy (negative) and noticed the smell a couple of days later.

My gasto says it's not from the endo and will probably go away in a few days, but it has not and is worse. Could this be H. pylori?

If you're having digestive problems
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

Hi Randy,

If you are having digestive problems to the extent that you HAVE a gastroenterologist and had to have an endoscopy done, then GET TESTED for H pylori!

Getting tested is the only way to know if you have H pylori or not and having such bad digestive problems that you are getting invasive testing is a good enough suspicion for H pylori to be tested for it.

And a 'sweet smell' is very unusual. H pylori can cause bad breath, but a 'sweet' smell is most often associated with diabetic ketoacidosis- an advanced long standing problem of undiagnosed diabetes. However, if you just had a procedure done where blood tests were done, they WOULD DEFINITELY have caught that if it were the case. So, that can't be it and if no one else can smell it, then I don't know WHAT that would mean since both the bad breath from H pylori and the 'fruity' breath from Diabetic Ketoacidosis can be smelled by others.

But again, the only way that there is to know if this bad smell on your breath truly IS from H pylori is to get tested for it and treated if you are positive.

Diagnosis?
by: Andrew

Randy,

Where you able to get a good diagnosis? I've had the same problem, off and on, for years. Seemingly randomly I can smell fermenting fruit all day, everywhere I go. It doesn't happen a lot, but it does happen and usually last a day or two. Sometimes longer.
