Am I Taking Too Much Vitamin B12?

Can you take too much B12 and can it be harmful? I came to your site from The Tendon Expert site (Joshua)and am at present following his steps to heal my injured achilles so began taking lots more of the nutritional supps he recommends including sublingual Methylcobalamin B12 about a week ago. (I am also taking an iron tonic daily for low iron which also has a tiny amount of Cyanocobalamin B12) Joshua recommends taking 2500-5000 mcg daily - this seems a large amount and I just want to be sure it's safe to do so.

I had a blood test to check iron levels a couple of weeks ago and my B12 level was 452 (folate 56),and I'm aware of the MCV link and that level was 90 if that's helpful. I am in NZ so the urine test for B12 you offer probably not practical for me.

Wouldn't recommend it if were harmful

Hi Rachel,

We'd not recommend such doses if it was harmful. Please read my page on Vitamin B12 Deficiency Treatment and you'll see that studies have been done on people taking up to 60 milligrams per day (that's 60,000 mcg per day) for months on end. And it was only beneficial for them without any problems noted from it.
