Went off of Gluten for a Month and I Felt Great

I have been getting colds and have been sick a lot lately and have been getting yeast infection after yeast infection that can only be cured with Diflucan.

I went off gluten for a month and felt great! But when the holidays rolled around I stated to cheat and now I'm sick with a G.I virus numbness in my mouth and also another yeast infection could this be gluten in tolerance?

Hi Jess,

Lets see. So you felt terrible, went off of gluten and felt great, then started eating gluten again and you feel terrible.

You certainly don't need ME to tell you what your problem is. I think that you've done a fine job figuring it out for yourself.

Now, what are you going to do going forward now that you know what your problem is? You might also be interested in reading the book Gluten Toxicity: The Mysterious Symptoms of Celiac Disease, Dermatitis Herpetiformis, And Non-Celiac Gluten Intolerance to see that strange symptoms being relieved by a gluten free diet is a common thing.

Some more thoughts to help

I find that PermaGuard food grade diatomaceous earth drastically decreases my internal fungal problems (and to some degree my external ones, too, when taken internally). (I'm guessing it would help with yeast infections, but I don't have experience in that regard.) It also seems to make me more resilient against colds and flus.

You should note that there are lots of minerals that fungi don't like. Loads of minerals that are good for you are bad for fungi (although some of them are bad for both of you). I'd highly recommend zinc, boron and perhaps some others, too. If you take zinc, I might recommend taking a little copper to balance it out (probably not more than 2 or 3 mg of copper a day; 20mg of zinc is probably good for that amount of copper). I used to think I was poisoned with copper until I actually tried some (while taking zinc). I actually felt a lot better after that and my mental function improved significantly (including short-term memory).

If you want to know somewhere to get some cheap but effective minerals, try swansonvitamins.com. Their zinc picolinate and chelated copper are great. I haven't tried their boron supplement (triple boron complex), but from the specs it looks pretty nice (I plan to try it soon). Currently, I'm using Thorne Research boron picolinate from Amazon?that works great, but it's a lot more expensive per pill (and I have a feeling the Swanson kind will work just as well, if not better, anyway, but I could be wrong).

Even if you do stay gluten-free (which I recommend, unless you figure out something else is your problem instead, somehow) then I'm still pretty sure these things will improve the way you feel. However, if you stay gluten-free, you'll very likely want to take vitamin and mineral supplements. Wheat has a lot in it that is hard to get elsewhere [Kerri's Note: I disagree. Humans didn't eat wheat for 99% of our evolution. If there's lots in it that we need that we can't get elsewhere, then it's unlikely that we would have been able to evolve so effectively]. When I first went gluten-free, I noticed a lot of issues pop up, and I think those were a result of nutritional deficiencies. After supplementing, a lot of those issues seem to be subsiding, and I feel a lot better.

If for some reason you feel you can't stay gluten-free, I recommend at least avoiding processed wheat flour, and begin grinding it yourself. Why? They add a lot of fungal enzymes to it to improve the bread quality. (Plus, I hear there?s more aluminum in the processed stuff. I don?t know if that?s true, though.) They used to use barley enzymes until recently, I hear. A reaction to enzymes is often misdiagnosed as gluten-intolerance (although I don?t think this is your main issue, if it is one, since I think your food was cooked, and cooking likely destroys most if not all enzymes). Aluminum is said to be able to hamper organs, which can hamper your digestion.
