Vitamin D and Sunlight
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

Hi Raghida,

I'm assuming that since you are in Australia that the units you are using are nmol/L, which is REALLY low!!

As to whether you are getting enough sun, that depends upon a lot of factors:

* Dark skin needs up to 20 times more sun than light skin, so if you have VERY dark skin, then half an hour might be completely insignificant where if you are very light skinned that may be a LOT of vitamin d.

* If you are older than 55, then you may not produce vitamin d in your skin as well as if you are younger.

* If you shower within 24 hours of sun exposure (possibly even 48 hours), you have washed all of the Vitamin D off of the oil in your skin and all the vitamin D that you made got washed down the drain.

* It also depends upon how strong the sun is. If you are VERY light skinned, then lying out before 10 or after 4 may be sufficient- but if you are dark-skinned, then it's likely not doing much.

So, it's VERY hard to say whether you are 'doing the right thing'. You should definitely get another level in about a month.

If your level is up, then GREAT- you'll need to make sure that you get regular sun exposure or take supplements for the rest of your life. If your level is still very low, then you'll have to rethink your strategy and consider taking supplements such as these 5000 IU Vitamin D3 Supplements that I offer here on my site.
