Regarding Itchiness and Vitamin D

I have been taking over the counter Vitamin D3 and calcium citrate supplements for several months per the instruction of my endocrinologist. The pills I am taking have no fillers or additives or any any other ingredients. They are very high quality. I continue to have daily itching.

I also have an allergy to wool. I could never wear it when it touches my skin I get all itchy and have trouble breathing.

I believe that, except for cod liver oil, vitamin d supplements are made out of lanolin, which is an ingredient in wool.

I have chosen to continue with the supplements and tolerate the side effects.

I am having another blood draw soon to check my D and PTH, which were 23 and 90 on 5/30/12.

I am wondering if others have the reaction to Vitamin D because of a lanolin allergy.

Many Threads

There are many threads already on Vitamin D and Lanolin. And I have a Lanolin-Free Vitamin D in my store.

Cod Liver Oil cannot be used as a vitamin D supplement since the ratio of vitamin A to vitamin D is too high and would cause Vitamin A Toxicity long before you met your vitamin d needs. So, if you are allergic to lanolin, then the Lanolin-Free Vitamin D from algae (intended for vegans) is your best choice.

Itchiness in 3 days
by: Elna NugentAnonymous

I am a senior living in the northeast and have tried taking 2000 iUs a day of D3. Itchiness begins on the 3rd day of taking it in gel form.

The first ingredient listed is soybean oil, then gelatin, vegetable glycerin and corn oil. Then a long list of what it doesn't contain like lactose, gluten etc.

I always had a problem wearing wool as a child. Couldn't tolerate it.
I only wear cotton clothing, even today if I can.

Could the soybean oil be a problem. The only prescription I take for life is the hormone therapy levothoroxine for hypothyroidism.

Vitamin D is made from lanolin
by: Kerri Knox, RN - The Immune Queen

Most Vitamin D is made from lanolin. This is almost certainly why you are having a problem. I offer a lanolin-free vitamin D in my shop. It's a Vegan Vitamin D Supplement, but it is made from algae and not from lanolin. Try this supplement. I suspect it will solve your itchiness problem, since it's almost certainly a problem of your lanolin allergy.

Soy and Thyroid Medication
by: Christine Karen

I have Hashimoto's Disease and have done extensive research on it and the thyroid. Ingesting soy is not recommended for thyroid patients and it should be avoided in all supplements.
