Maintaing Your Vitamin D Levels
by: Kerri Knox, RN-The Immune Queen!

That's a great question. First of all, did you become Vitamin D Deficient even though you get out in the sun for 1 hour a day already?

Or did you START getting out in sun after you found out you were Vitamin D Deficient?

If you were already getting out in the sun daily before you were diagnosed, then there could be several reasons that you are still Vitamin D Deficient:

  • You Cover up your Skin

  • You wear sunscreen

  • You live North of 37 degrees latitude

  • You have dark or VERY DARK skin

  • You are older and don't absorb it as well

  • You wash with soap within 48 hours of exposure

Even ONE of these could COMPLETELY block any possible Vitamin D that you would get from the sun!!

For the vast majority of people, as your case illustrates, it is most practical to take a Vitamin D Supplement forever and
Check Your Vitamin D Level yearly at least- more frequently if you are still Vitamin D Deficient. Then in the summer, you can decrease your Vitamin D intake to account for sun exposure.

Vitamin D and Dementia
by: Kerri Knox, RN-The Immune Queen!

As far as your other question is concerned, there ARE links to Vitamin D and Dementia.

Several studies have shown that elderly people with Dementia tend to have lower levels of Vitamin D than those without dementia.

But as far as I know, there has been no proof that the Vitamin D Deficiency CAUSES the dementia- although that is certainly a possibility.

But having adequate Vitamin D levels throughout life is being shown to just be more and more important and prevents a whole host of problems- from cancer to fractures to just plain old being able to function well in old age.

It's a pretty seriously important vitamin and you would do well to maintain 'optimal' vitamin D levels throughout life.
