Fibromyalgia and Gluten Intolerance

(United States)

Less than a year ago I was diagnosed with Symptoms of Fibromyalgia. Looking back I am sure I was dealing with the symptoms for over 6 to 7 years. (FYI...Although I have 3 grown sons - I had a total of 5 miscarriages before/after my first son).

I notice that after having an evening meal with pasta or bread I have trouble sleeping. I can fall asleep - but have a restless night after only a few hours of sleep.

Like so many women my age - (57) is it related to menopause, the fibromyalgia OR could I have a problem with Gluten Sensitivity?

I am taking a multi-vitamin and 2000 units of vitamin D3. Lyrica did not help with my fibro symptoms - so I no longer take that.

Keeping a diary for a few day of my pain and fatigue and what I eat might help.

I guess my main question is - have you had any connection with gluten sensitivity being a Fibromyalgia Cause?

Yes, yes and yes...

So, first of all, I'm going to tell you something that I hope doesn't confuse you or make you angry, but -

"There is no such thing as Fibromyalgia!!"

All fibromyalgia is, is a collection of symptoms that are a convenient way for doctors to say that you have a lot of similar sensations as certain other people.

The word 'Fibro' means connective tissue and the word 'myalgia' means pain. So, your doctor has told you that you have connective tissue pain. He went to medical school to be able to tell you that you have pain!

So, what I want to know is WHY you have this pain, and I talk extensively about the reasons why people have fibro in this blog post called Fibromyalgia- Syndrome vs Disease.

Please read it to get a different perspective on Fibromyalgia. Then, you already told me a clue as to the cause of your Fibromyalgia. Please read my page on Gluten Sensitivity and you'll see that you really MUST get off of gluten ASAP as that may be one of the primary causes of your pain.

Also, just to give you some hope as to what nutritional strategies can do for Fibro, please read Sharon's thread on Increased Fibromyalgia Pain.

Pain with fibromyalgia and eating wheat
by: Anonymous

Hi, I am a 48 year old woman and have been diagnosed recently with Fibromyalgia. Since the age of 16, I have had IBS and have now worked out that by eating wheat I will within the next 48 hours of eating wheat have a major flare up with the Fibro.

Now, I am no scientist but it is pretty obvious to me that there is a definite link with diet and fibromyalgia. I feel massively different after eating the wheat and can feel my body trying to fight it. Could it be that whilst my body is fighting the food it does NOT like, the immune system is working extra hard and this is when the Fibro starts causing more than the usual problems.

Anyone else had this happen to them ??
