Safe Vitamin D Dosage

My vitamin d level is 26 ng/ml. It was 24 ng/ml
3 months ago and I began taking 5000 units per day. Now my doctor recommends taking 50,000 per week for 4 weeks in addition to the 5000 per day.

Is that dosage dangerous?

50,000 IU's per week is not at all dangerous. There has never been a case of vitamin D toxicity at dosages of less than 10,000 IU's per day for VERY LONG periods of time.

And the way that you get Vitamin D toxicity is by having vitamin D levels that are too high! And obviously, your levels are not too high, but are too low. So you NEED more Vitamin D...

So, it sounds like your doctor is actually looking out for your best interests. Thank him when you see him and make sure that he Checks Your Vitamin D Level again in another 3 or 4 months to make sure that you are getting enough Vitamin D.

Thank you for the answer. I appreciate it.

If I take a pill that is 50,000 units once a week and I also take 5000 per day, that averages to a little over 12,000 units per day.

I would take the 50,000 for 4 weeks.

Is that still ok?

Vitamin D Overdose is Way Higher
by: Kerri Knox, RN-The Immune Health Queen!

So, to put your dose into perspective- the total dose that you will be taking over one month is 360,000 IU's, right?

That's 12,000 IU's per day for 30 days. A 'normal' way of Preventing vitamin D deficiency in the elderly (in certain places that actually care about vitamin d deficiency) is to give them a vitamin D injection of 600,000 IU's once a year before the beginning of winter.

Several studies have given people over 1,000,000 IU's- that's over one MILLION Iu's over a 3 month period without ill effects. One research team flew to Tierra Del Fuego at the start of their LONG winter and gave a group of CHILDREN an injection of 600,000 IU's and there were no ill effects. So, 360,000 Iu's in an adult to correct vitamin d deficiency is perfectly fine- in fact, when you get your Vitamin D Level Checked again- it's likely to be too low and you'll want to repeat that regimen until it get to the research recommended 'optimal' range of 40 to 80 ng/ml.

Don't stop at the laboratory reference 'normal' low of 30 ng/ml as researchers believe this is too low.

Please see my page on Vitamin D Therapy.

If your son has had abdominal pain for years, please look into Gluten Intolerance as that is one EXTREMELY likely cause of chronic gastrointestinal problems- even if his doctors have tested him for it and have told you that is NOT the problem, it still very well could be.
