Sleepiness as one of the Side Effects of Vitamin D?
by: Kerri Knox- The Immune Queen

I just want to reassure you that you have definitely NOT overdosed on Vitamin D, a Vitamin D deficient adult could not possibly overdose on one 50,000 IU pill.

More About Vitamin D

Side effects of Vitamin D are VERY unusual. So unusual, in fact, that I have never actually heard of any at all!

NONE of the studies on Vitamin D report ANY Side effects of Vitamin D!

Having said that, everyone's system is different and it is certainly not out of the realm of possibility that you are one of the few people in the world who has Side Effects of Vitamin D.

More likely, however, would be a couple of things:

1) It had nothing at all to do with the Vitamin D and it was something else that you took, you didn't sleep well the night before, etc.

2) You had a reaction to something IN the Vitamin D pills that you took- maybe the pill coating or the oil base. You may want to try out a different brand of Vitamin D such as this Longevity Plus Vitamin D3.

I have seen people having side effects.
by: April

I have been looking at a lot forums at vitamin D deficiency & vitamin D therapy.

I have read forums where people who were deficient after taking large doses of vitamin D felt very sleepy, dry mouth, fast heart beat, muscle spasms, tingling feeling in parts there body, bone pain, etc.

I myself have been experiencing all kind symptoms since taking vitamin therapy. So i called & asked my endocrine doctor could vitamin D therapy cause all these symptoms?

He said "among other things".

Side Effects of Vitamin D

I believe you that you have seen people writing this on boards. I also believe that your endocrinologist says that this can be a side effect of therapy.

BUT... these are also all side effects of placebos. And is there any statistical difference between the side effects that you would get from a placebo and side effects of the actual therapy?

Researchers in the THOUSANDS of research reports that I have read, report VIRTUALLY NO STATISTICALLY SIGNIFICANT SIDE EFFECTS FROM VITAMIN D!!

Side effects are almost never even mentioned in these studies and patients dropping out due to side effects are virtually nonexistent in any of these studies- a phenomenon that is quite common in drug studies.

And I hate to tell you this, but the "Side Effects" that you mention, actually sound like symptoms of Vitamin D Deficiency- not side effects of the treatment for it!!

Specifically the bone pain, numbness and tingling- those are Vitamin D Deficiency Symptoms!!

Also, it's possible (likely?) that maybe the reason that these other people are having side effects and that the people in research studies don't, is because of the high grade pharmaceutical quality supplements that are used in studies.

Maybe these people on the boards are having side effects because of the fillers, carriers, preservatives, etc. in the over the counter pills that they are taking. Most Vitamin D is held in a fatty acid carrier that could go rancid if left on the shelf for a long time. So it could be that they are not having side effects from the ACTUAL Vitamin D at all!!

That's why I always recommend high quality Vitamin D Supplements such as Longevity Plus Vitamin D3, where I can be assured of the quality of the supplements that my clients use.

Vitamin D Deficient
by: Sherri

I too have a deficientcy in Vitamin D and have been prescribed 50,000IU 2x weekly for 2 months. I have taken my 2nd dose and for the second time it floored me. I am so sleepy and cannot seem to function at all. My doctor said to try and take it early afternoon and if I have the same affect, to discontinue and go to over the counter.

You should do over the counter anyway...

Hi Sherry,

You should read my page on Prescription Vitamin D to see why you should switch ANYWAY!!

Prescription Vitamin D is NOT recommended. I've also found some references to sleepiness as a side effect of vitamin d. They say that it usually goes away in about a week by itself.

Vitamin D and Sun Page
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

Please see my Vitamin D and Sun. You CAN get your vitamin d through sun, but if you weren't able to before now, then why do you think hat you'll get enough sun now? But assuming that you just didn't get outside before , but you're committed to doing so now, you'll only be able to get 'enough' sun if:

* You have light skin (it's take up to 20 times more sun exposure depending upon the darkness of your skin)

* You have enough sun and it's strong enough where you live

* You get enough fat in your diet to produce a good layer of oil on your skin.

* You don't shower that oil off after sun exposure for 24 to 36 hours

* You have sufficient magnesium levels to support raising your vitamin d levels

Even if all of those are true, its' likely that you'll still get sleepy getting vitamin d via the sun if you do taking supplements. Your levels is EXTREMELY low and there are going to be some consequences and adjustments to your body due to allowing yourself to become so deficient. As the previous poster said, don't worry about it. It's your body healing. In the questions on the other posts on this same thread, I give MANY tips on how to get over the sleepiness quicker, but taking 3500 IU's per day and/or getting a prescription from your doctor is not going to help you get over the sleepiness more quickly, and I strongly advise against taking the prescription vitamin d for reasons that I've outlined hundreds of times on the site.

Vitamin d
by: Debby

After two years of a zero, yes zero vitamin d count I am so frustrated I could scream. I am prescribed a pill once a week of 50,000 plus a 5,00 each day and still zero. I feel like I am a lot more sleepy than before I started this. The doctor gets so frustrated but no picnic for me either. Does anyone else get tired taking this? I'm close to stopping all of it and see if I feel better
