I Thought I Just Had IBS, But Maybe I Have Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity?

My husband and I recently started trying to eat a Paleo diet for better health. after a couple of weeks of eating mostly Paleo I ate some chex cereal and the next evening had a small serving of regular pasta. I have started to feel incredibly bloated and having tenderness as well. I tried otc things to relieve the bloating but none of the vS is passing. I even feel like there's air trapped under my diaphragm, if that's possible.


Wondering if I could be sensitive to gluten, and maybe have non-Celiac gluten intolerance. The book I read about Paleo diets warned that many people discover they have all kinds of food allergies they never knew about.

Need some advice.

Feeling awful.

Hi Tabitha,

Good for you for going on the Paleo Diet. I highly recommend that people try it. Personally, I think that it is the healthiest way of eating that people can eat and I very much recommend the books:

I find it interesting that you use the phrase 'just had IBS'! It sounds like you have an idea that a severe lifechanging autoimmune disease is a minor thing. To me that would be HUGE. I don't think that I could EVER say that I 'just' have an autoimmune disease that is attacking my bowels! Yipes!

But YES!! YOU HAVE GLUTEN SENSITIVITY.... You shouldn't even need to ASK at this point. Yeah!! You've figured out that you DON'T 'just' have IBS, but that you have a bowel problem caused by eating a substance that is ruining your bowels and your immune system...

By the way, please do NOT confuse gluten sensitivity with an 'allergy'. It is NOT. What is happening is that the gluten actually doesn't get digested and it coats your bowels like glue. Then the undigested gluten gets attacked by your body's immune system and since it's stuck to your bowels, your bowels get attacked as well.

NOT an allergy. It's much more serious than that so no wonder that you have IBS..

As far as the bloating is concerned, you'll just have to wait it out and remember this sensation the next time that you want to go off of your amazing Paleo Diet!

Chex cereal

OK, but isn't Chex cereal gluten free? I know for sure the rice and corn flavored ones advertise that they are. Not trying to suggest that Chex is healthy gluten free food but we are on a GF diet and do occasionally eat it as a snack/junk food (in moderation).

I don't know if that was Tabitha responding or someone else. I don't know if Chex is gluten free. You'd have to look on the package. If it DOESN'T say gluten free, then it's generally not regardless of the ingredients.

In any case, whether it is gluten free or not, you ate it and you got bloated SO BADLY that you are in extreme pain. My suggestion would be to not eat ANYTHING that causes bloating, pain or both regardless of what the ingredients are...

Although I myself gluten free..Due to thyroid problems. I just wanted to say that perhaps with the extra fats that you are eating in your Paleo diet have you ever considered that you had Gall stones?

The air being trapped under your diaphragm sounds like a symptom of Billious Cholic... I always thought that the feeling was akin to being crushed from the inside out..
The extra carbs would have simply fermented inside of you causing gas or wind as they say in my neck of the woods..

Just another angle so to speak but pain is a warning and wind is no joke.... so just get it checked out

Yes corn, rice and others can be gluten response

Tabitha, corn and rice issues are real and those with celiac issues often can't have them either. Corn and rice both contain some form and amount of gluten. Corn specifically in this country is being genetically modified. Non nutritive items are added for taste, growth, color.

Functional or integrative medicine professionals probably would have suggested you also cut out corn and rice to start and then try them individually to see what happens. I've been very sick and the sad part is even most professionals or experts still don't how individual these issues can be.

The body does not need tons of any one item except vegetable. We still need protein but again here in the states much of it is raised on gluten feed and engineered foods..specifically corn feed modified and cut with wheat and steroids to bulk up the chickens,cows etc. I NEVER would have believed ask this until the last two tested of my life. An antibiotic destroyed the lining and bacteria in my mouth, throat, stomach, intestines, colon among many other horrible things. I will bloat, ache, itch, or even have hives if I eat corn items or animals fed with it.

Rice also hurts severely. You are the captain of your own ship. Don't be alarmed. That serves no good purpose. Be gentle week yourself and forgiving in all things. Keep track of your intake, do research, make your own new favorite recipes. Moderation in all things. God bless!

GMO's The Culprit Too

I have found that ACS Colloidal NanoSilver has helped with some healing of the body. But also most important, please stay away from ALL GMO FOOD( genetically modified or genetically engineered) stick with NON GMO or ORGANIC ONLY..

Also from my understanding all seafood is adequate in Mercury except for Salmon, Herring, and Sardines. There are also many Fish that are genetically engineered as well, to include Tilapia, Swai, some forms of Bass, and others.Very sad but true.

Be more safe than sorry.
