Help! My Vitamin D Level Won't Go Up!

by Ellen Moore
(Montana)

I have been off and on the prescription vitamin D for about a year. Recently I have been on the 50,000 IU pill once a week for about 2 months. In addition to that I also take about 1,000 to 1,400 IU a day.

My levels were checked and it is 28. I have not been able to get my level above 30. I take nexium for GERD and I wonder if this is causing me not to absorb the Vitamin D.

What do you think?

Sincerely,

Ellen Moore

Hmmm. Not sure...

Hi Ellen,

Could you tell me more about how much Vitamin D that you are taking on a regular basis. If you are only taking Vitamin D 'on and off' and not taking it consistently, then it's not surprising that your levels aren't coming up.

And also, if there is a lag from the time that you stop the prescription to when you get your blood drawn, then the vitamin D may have 'worn off'. Prescription Vitamin D has a much shorter half life than over the counter supplements like these 5000 IU Vitamin D3 Supplements that I offer on my site, so it's not surprising that they are not keeping your levels up as they should.

In other words, Prescription Vitamin D wears off a lot quicker. So, I would suggest getting 100% onto Vitamin D3 supplements. I'm not at all sure why your doctor is making it as complicated as taking one pill of one thing once a week and then a daily pill of something else.

And, if he wanted to, it is TOTALLY safe and effective to simply take a 300,000 or 600,000 IU 'loading dose' of Vitamin D to get your levels up, and then put you on a 4000 or 5000 IU maintenance dose every day (make sure the loading dose is Vitamin D3 Supplements and don't let him give you an unnecessary Vitamin D Injection to do that.

You have a lot of options before I would say that you are not absorbing the Vitamin D. But it IS suspicious that your levels are not higher.

Could you give me some more information about your condition? Do you have any other health problems? Have you ever been tested for The H Pylori Bacteria?

My levels are also very low
by: Karina

Hello there,
I'm epileptic and I'm having problems with my VD levels. About a year ago I got my first test back with a level of 8.5, after that my doctor put me on a 3000ml a day regime to see if my levels will come up, but the last test came back with a level of 9.1 not much of a difference.

Besides the VD I'm taking Lamictal (400ml a day) & Topamax (200ml a day).

My primary doctor didn't have an answer as of what could be causing it, do you by any chance have an idea as of what can be the reason why my body is not retaining the VD?

Thank you

You're taking an inadequate dose
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

Hi Karina,

It's not that you are not 'retaining' it, you aren't taking hardly any vitamin d at all. You are taking the correct dosage for an 8 or 9 year old as a daily MAINTENANCE dose. That is not the proper dosage for an adult who is deficient.

Please read and follow the instructions on the Vitamin D Therapy page to bring your levels up. There's nothing wrong with you, you just have a doctor that doesn't know what he's doing...

Please read the thread again. I told the woman who started the thread EXACTLY the same thing that I would tell you. All you need to do is to read my answer to her, follow and read the link that I sent her to, possibly read a few more of the thousand questions that I have answered on this exact question on my site, and you will know what the problem is.

Vit D levels is 2
by: Deb

I went from 50,000 units once a week to the same everyday for 2 months. Back and forth for almost a year and my Vit D levels never go over 2 or 4. What can I do? Bones from neck surgery are not regrowing. Helpppppppp!

Please read my 1000 pages on this....
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

Really, if you read what I said to the LAST two people, I've ALREADY answered this question on this thread. AND I've written over 1000 pages answering this EXACT same question. AND I've written pages dedicated to this problem that I refer people to on those other threads as well.

Read the pages on:

Vitamin D Absorption

Vitamin D and Magnesium

and be sure to read the many pages that I have on:

Gluten Sensitivity

to see why magnesium deficiency and/or gluten sensitivity are your likely problems. And as I've said literally thousands of times on this website and on the pages that I referenced on this thread already, GET OFF OF THE PRESCRIPTION VITAMIN D!!

My dosage
by: Ellen Moore

Kerri,
I take a prescription Vitamin D pill of 50,000 IU three times a week. If I remember to take my multivitamin that would add an additional 800 IU a day.

Vit d causes my hair to come out
by: Anonymous

My hair started coming out very gradually so I went to a dermatologist. The dermatologist told me I was taking too much Vit d, k, a and e. So I stopped all vits and my hair grew back. Then after a physical, my Vit d level was only 15. So I was given a prescription for Vit d -- once again my hair started coming out; every time I brushed it, my brush was full of hair. What is wrong with me?
