100,000 units of Vitamin D per week is fine...
by: Kerri Knox, RN-The Immune Health Queen!

Hi Lewis,

You're doctor is just looking out for your best interests, really! Treating Vitamin D Deficiency with 100,000 units of Vitamin D per week is aggressive treatment, but it's certainly far from being too much.

Remember that Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin. What you don't use will get stored in your tissues and saved for later. That's a good thing right now because you are way too low and your doctor just wants to build up your level.

There have been MANY studies done using MUCH higher dosages without ill effects. One study Gave 300,000 units of Vitamin D just once to correct deficiency and several others have given even more than One Million Units of Vitamin D over an 8 week period without any problems or overdoses.

So, your 400,000 units of Vitamin D over 4 weeks is perfectly safe to use as long as you get a Vitamin D Blood Level Checked again in about 3 to 4 months.

And make sure that your doctor puts you on a maintenance dose as well.

Hi Elizabeth,

First of all, please read my page on why you should NOT be taking Prescription Vitamin D at all anyway!

It's simply not as potent as the 'Over the Counter' vitamin d3 and it's got a shorter 'half life' -meaning that it wears off more quickly. So, ditch the prescription stuff and get a good vitamin D3 supplement and take it at the same dosage.

I offer high dose Vitamin D Supplements here for just that reason.

Next, please read my Vitamin D Absorption page to see what else could be causing you to not absorb your vitamin d properly, and some common remedies for this such as:

Taking your supplements with some fat

Taking magnesium every day while you are on vitamin d supplements (which should be for the rest of your life, really)

So, take a look on those pages, try out some of the solutions there and write back after your next blood test to let us know how its going.

100,000 Units Vitamin D EVERY DAY!
by: zippytex

This is dry D3. I have a malabsorption syndrome from a very short bowel. When I started the Vit. D test showed I had a level of <3!!!! So, I tried normal dosages, no change. The doctor had me take 50,000 unis dry D3 every other day. Three weeks later it had gone up to 11. Then I took 50,000 units every day, went up to 21. Now, for the next three weeks I am taking 100,000 units every day. I go to the doctor on the 27th of this month, Sept., and we will see what the level is. I hope it is at least at the low edge of normal, which is 50. But, we will see. I do not absorb fat, hardly any at all, it passes straight through as I only have 4" inches of ileum, which is where most of the fat is absorbed. We shall see. I have no adverse symptoms from the Vitamin D that I am aware of and we keep close account of my levels. The surgery I had is called, jejunoileal bypass. Thanks for listening.

Vitamin D3 100000 units
by: Anonymous

I was prescribed 50000 units once weekly I've been taking it 4 years now my blood work back then came back 17 for vitamin D I was extremely deficient even though I was in the sun a lot and took multivitamins.

I have been up to 100000 units. I'm hyperphotosensitive. I wasn't before I got diagnosed with dermatomyositis. Anyway i have to take it now because the disease itself takes it away fr8m me . But everyone most anyway are deficient in vitamin D3. Or so I've been told.
