What Kind of Vitamin D Should I Take?

by Kathy Foster
(E.Stroudsburg, Pa)

My doctor called me with low vitamin D result of 15.8 ng/ml. She told me to take D'Active. Did you ever hear of this vitamin/supplement? Please respond asap.

Also, my other lab results are:

cholesterol 230 High
triglycerides 167
HDL CHOL IS 55
LDL CHUL IS 142

I never had a problem with the Vit D level could it be from medication?

I have also had my gallbladder removed?

What kind of vitamin d...
by: Kerri Knox, RN-The Immune Health Queen!

Hi Kathy,

I have never heard of 'D Active'. A quick internet search did not turn up anything either. But I don't know why your doctor is telling you a specific brand name of vitamin d when any Vitamin D3 will do.

The important thing is the dosage, not the brand. So, HOW MUCH did she tell you to take?

Most 'Brand Name' vitamin D's will NOT have enough vitamin D to correct your deficiency and I suspect that this 'D Active' is likely to have only about 800 IU in it. That is WAY too low and you will need much more than that.

Something closer to 5000 IU's -10,000 IU's per day is what is generally needed to correct Vitamin D deficiency. So, if you need a good Vitamin D3 at higher doses and don't want to take 6 or 8 tablets a day, you can get 5000 IU Vitamin D3 Supplements that will be in a MUCH better dosage for you.

Also, I'm not a big believer in cholesterol levels, HOWEVER, these Newer Cholesterol Guidlines that divide Triglycerides by HDL make MUCH more sense and show REAL risk better than total cholesterol.

Unfortunately, if you punch in your numbers, you are at high cardiovascular risk with these guidelines also. This means that you are NOT taking care of yourself and that you need to start doing something about your health.

Diet is usually the biggest culprit for most people and it's VERY likely that you could be making a lot of improvements in that area- am I right?

So, when you are ready to do something about your health so that you can prevent chronic health problems down the road, then check out The Healthy Urban Kitchen for an entirely different perspective on how to eat to improve your health.

Let me know if you have any questions.
