What Are My Chances of Having H Pylori

by Mary
(Simi Valley, CA US)

My nephew was diagnosed with H. Pylori. He served in the military and went to Kawait, and since then he's been feeling stomach pain. I've been around him and used utensils in their household that he has used.. What is the probability that I've contracted the disease? I have been having slight pain in stomach which lingers from mild pain to stronger uncomfortable pain.

You could have given it to HIM for all you know!

Hi Mary,

There are no 'probabilities' in this. It's an infection, not a mathematical equation or a coin toss. You either have it, or you don't. 100% or 0%. So just get tested.

But don't blame him if you have it. You could have had it for YEARS or even decades without symptoms. I can practically be 100% certain that you've kissed or shared utensils with other H pylori infected people in your life.

If you DO have H pylori, there is just as much chance that YOU gave it to your nephew 10 years ago as he gave it to you two weeks ago.

Just get an H Pylori Stool Test and find out if you have it and then treat it if you do. If you DO have it, blame YOURSELF for allowing your immune system to become so depressed that you got a chronic infection and decide to do something about it.

Do NOT assume that you nephew gave it to you since you have ZERO evidence that he did. You could have had it for decades already. There is no way of knowing unless you tested negative right before he came to your house and you tested positive since then. Otherwise, you are just speculating unnecessarily and inaccurately.
