Vitamin D3 supplements for my 1 yr old?

by Julie Van Bysteren
(Klickitat, WA, USA)

I was able to find a gummy form of Vitamin D3 at 500iu/gummy bite. Would these be safe for my 1 yr old to take and at what dose? She has reflux that is exacerbated by milk, so she does not have much dairy, and I want to make sure that she is getting enough Vitamin D.

Thank you

Hi Julie,

More About Vitamin D

I don't recommend 'gummy vitamins' because they taste SOOOOOO good that its easy for kids to get into them and take too much, not to mention that in order to taste so good and look so pretty they have to have LOTS of artificial colors, flavors and tons of sugar.

There is an excellent Vitamin D Spray that it much better for safety and no artificial stuff.

As far as dosage is concerned, Dr. John Cannell of the Vitamin D Council says

"Children over the age of 1 year, and less than 4 years of age, should take 2,000 IU vitamin D per day, depending on body weight, latitude or residence, skin pigmentation, and sun exposure.

Children over the age of 4, and less than 10 years of age, should take 3,000 IU per day, unless they get significant sun exposure. On the days they are outside in the sun, they do not need to take any; in the winter they will need to take 3,000 IU every day.

Children over the age of 10 years old should follow instructions for adults"

Two questions, though:

1) What about Vitamin D for YOU. Even if you drink dairy that is only about 200 iu's per day. Hardly enough to meet your needs. It's likely that as a new mother, you are probably very deficient. It would be great if you got a Vitamin D Level to find out.

2) Why does your 1 year old have reflux. That is VERY unusual and I'd be interested in hearing more about it.

Hello again. Thank you for your input regarding Vitamin D supplements. I actually am low. I had my level tested awhile ago and was put on 50,000 IU per week for 8 weeks.

I did not have it retested but am taking 2000 IU per day myself now. I have 4 children all together and have been giving my 13 and 15 yr old vitamin D supplements as well and my 5 yr old is taking a multiple vitamin with D and I am going to add another 500 IU daily for him as well. (Whew thats a lot of Vitamin D!) =).

As for the reflux. both of my younger children have reflux. I am curious as to why also. I have been thinking of visiting a naturopath to see if they have any insight.

I am leaning towards allergies as a cause. Do you have any ideas?

Reflux in children is actually more frequent than most people realize.

Thanks again!

Common is not the same as normal...

While reflux may be common, it is certainly not 'normal' in kids, so that would be an excellent idea to look into it. You already seem to have found mild to be one of the causes- or at least something that makes it worse.

Other possibilities might be Gluten Sensitivity, H Pylori Bacteria Infection or maybe a B vitamin Deficiency.

Maybe none of the above! But food allergies sounds like a good place to start.
