Vitamin d from purified cod liver...

Should You Take Vitamin D From Cod Liver Oil?

Should You Take Vitamin D From Cod Liver Oil?

I found a Vitamin D supplement from purified cod liver oil. it contains 400 iu of vitamin D and 600 iu of vitamin A. I would really like to take a natural vitamin d supplement, but I don't want to get too much vitamin A. Do you think, at these levels, I am putting myself at risk?

Is it worth taking this supplement.

Thanks,

Guy

Vitamin D from Cod Liver Oil
by: Kerri Knox, RN-The Immune Health Queen!

Hi Guy,

Just so you know, other vitamin D's are 'natural' as well. Most are purified either from fish or from Lanolin.

So, cod liver oil is VERY high in Vitamin A vs. Vitamin D, and even the cod liver oil that you found would have you taking upwards of 6000 IU's of Vitamin A to get even CLOSE to enough vitamin D to meet your needs (you likely need between 3800 to 5000 IU's per day for a maintenance dose).

So, in nature, you need to understand that -EXCEPT IN CERTAIN ANIMAL LIVERS- vitamin A does NOT come in the form of Vitamin A- it comes in the form of Caratenoids, which are a much friendlier and less toxic form of vitamin A for humans. It's how we are SUPPOSED to get our Vitamin A.

And while it 'seems' natural, Dr. Mercola states in This Article on Cod Liver Oil, "Cod liver oil is in fact a highly processed food that was never consumed by humans prior to this[the industrial revolution].

So in this case taking something simply because it is 'natural' does not necessarily equal 'good for you' and could impair your health.

This also brings up the idea of bioidentical vs synthetic. Remember that vitamin D is not a vitamin but a hormone. And hormones need to be "bioidentical" for humans to assimilate them properly. And vitamin D3 in pill form is 'bioidentical' to what is found in the body. So even if it WERE synthetic, it is preferable to, say, the Vitamin D2 that you can make yourself by sun-drying mushrooms.

The sun dried mushrooms certainly have 'natural' vitamin D and, while not being harmful, is not bioidentical and is not used in the same way as Vitamin D3 from fish or sun is used.

So, there are companies that make synthetic bioidentical hormones that are preferable to, for instance, the 'natural' progesterone found in wild yams that is NOT bioidentical.

So, in this instance, stop worrying about 'natural' vitamin D and simply take a good high quality Vitamin D3 Supplement. There is not one single health proponent out there who is worried about whether D3 is 'natural' or not, and so you shouldn't either.

And if you are still worried about it, you should know that taking supplements is not natural, and if you REALLY want to get vitamin D 'naturally' then you should be getting it from sunlight or fish. Those are the only 2 ways that are TRULY natural ways to get vitamin D!
