Vitamin D for Gastric Bypass...
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

Hi Mike,

Well, you must have a forward thinking doctor to 'believe' in giving your wife vitamin d for her gastric bypass, but I'm a bit confused with your post. Did you mean that you could get over-the-counter vitamin d in the form of Vitamin D3?

You 'said' d2, but I'll answer your question assuming that you meant d3.

No, there is absolutely no danger taking the D3 in favor of the D2, in fact Vitamin D3 has a longer length of activity, so she may be able to drop down on the dosage a bit once it builds up because it has a longer 'half life'.

Also, taking vitamin d3 over d2 may have longer term benefits that we are just not aware of yet because D2 isn't as 'biologically active' on the vitamin d receptor genes that are located in nearly every cell in the body. So, vitamin d2 may simply raise blood levels but not give you all of the disease preventing benefits that you would want to take vitamin d to get in the first place!!

Also, if your wife is not on a High Quality Multivitamin and Mineral Supplement AND a separate Methylcobalamin B12 Sublingual Supplement, then you need to seriously consider getting her on these ASAP.

She WILL get Vitamin B12 Deficiency Symptoms at some point, if she doesn't have them already. And This Mayo Clinic Study shows that taking regular multivitamins after gastric bypass can prevent a condition called Peripheral Neuropathy that is an all too common and entirely preventable problem after gastric bypass surgery.

Remember that there are only a few vitamins and minerals that your doctor actually checks for, but that there are hundreds that we need. After gastric bypass, it's better to assume that you are NOT absorbing nutrients and to take steps to prevent nutrient deficiencies than to assume that you ARE absorbing nutrients and then wonder why you are experiencing health problems that your doctor can't find an answer for later.
