Weak Nails and Losing Your Hair
by: Kerri Knox, RN-The Immune Health Queen!

Hi Marcia,

Hmmm. That's great that you have been diagnosed with Vitamin D Deficiency so that you can now get it corrected. Well, Vitamin D Deficiency can be contributing to your weak nails and hair loss because of the decreased absorption of calcium that a lack of vitamin D causes.

But unfortunately, it's unlikely that that is the ONLY reason that you have hair loss and weak nails. It's likely that you have a general nutrition and/or absorption problem that is causing you to be malnourished. It's likely that part of the absorption problem that you are having is from a condition called Leaky Gut Syndrome, which is usually caused from Gluten Sensitivity.

Even though hair loss and weak nails are not a Serious illness, they could very well be early symptoms of a more serious problem. I recommend that you follow the instructions in The Healthy Urban Kitchen to learn more about healing your body with food and which will help in healing the intestinal tract so that you can increase your absorption and prevent any diseases that may be in your future.

Another really great help for hair and nail strength is Leaky Gut Syndrome, which is usually caused from Essential Bone Broth. This healing and anti-inflammatory food supplies nutrients, amino acids and collagen that are the building blocks of hair and nails. Since I started eating bone broth on a regular basis, my nails have become super strong where they never were before!!

Ridged & weak nails
by: Tara

I have healthy thick hair but my nails are awful. I have lots of vertical ridges and they always split once the nail starts to grow. Added to that my nails are very soft & bendable. Nothing I've tried seems to help.

What have you tried..
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

Hi Tara,

Considering that I know nothing about what you've actually tried, it's VERY hard to suggest anything to help. But have you tested and treated your vitamin d level as I outline in my Vitamin D Therapy page and as I've recommended on this page?

Have you tried using Bone Broth as I've outlined elsewhere through my site?

Otherwise, there are a thousand things that might help, but without knowing what you've done, I would just be wasting my time to go over them since you might have already done them...

I have strong hair, but my nails are very weak and break easily. I am currently being medicated for Hypothyroidism and vitamin D deficiency. Can you suggest anything to improve my nails. I am vegetarian. Thanks.
