Vitamin D and Osteoporosis vs Osteopenia

by Alan Bull
(North Tyneside. England)

I am a 62 year old male diagnosed recently with Osteoporosis and Osteoperisis. My recent Vitamin blood test gave a result of 15nmol/L.

It is clear I am Vitamin D deficient, after many months housebound with three breaks to my left humerus.

Vit D/cal supplements Px.

Am I suffering Osteomalacia as well?
At what level is Osteomalacia diagnosed?

Osteomalacia and Osteoperisis
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

Hi Alan,

More About Vitamin D

To tell you the truth, I have NEVER heard of Osteoperisis and the only mentions of it that I could find anywhere, including research studies, were misspellings of osteoporosis.

WOW! Your Vitamin D Level is REALLY low, and you'd think that your doctor would have caught it sooner than this with 3 breaks to your leg. I'm really sorry that you've had to go through all of that.

So, osteomalacia can actually be diagnosed at almost any level of Vitamin D Deficiency. Technically, it is a defect in the protein matrix of the bones, causing them to become soft. While there are technical ways of diagnosing Osteomalacia, a super easy way (that is not always right, but in people with osteoporosis or super low Vitamin D levels, it's a pretty good quick test for it) to determine if you have osteomalacia is to push on your sternum and if you have 'bone pain' then it's fairly likely that you have osteomalacia too.

Most people with osteomalacia have experienced 'bone pain' or other chronic body pains and fatigue for long period of time too. So that's a non perfect way to determine if you have osteomalacia.
