Safety of 400 IU's of Vitamin D per day
by: Kerri Knox, RN-The Immune Health Queen!

Hi Lou,

I know that your question REALLY is, "Are their any dangerous interactions between Vitamin D and Norvasc?"

More About Vitamin D

But that is not the question that I am going to answer. Any medication interactions should ALWAYS be run across a pharmacist. You can call up ANY pharmacy and just ask them. There is no way that one person can know about every drug interaction, and that is why pharmacies have computers that do that for them.

Having said THAT, I'm more concerned with the "Safety" of you taking 400 IU's of vitamin D per day. Taking 400 IU's per day is as safe as taking NO vitamin D- which in my mind is pretty darned risky!!

Let me explain. If you read my Vitamin D Requirements page and look at the chart there, you will see that taking 400 IU's is virtually the same as taking none at all. 400 IU's is HALF THE DOSE FOR A NEWBORN INFANT!

So, if you are going to take vitamin D, you really need to get a vitamin D level drawn and find out what your level is. Then you need to take enough vitamin D to bring your level up to between 40 to 80 ng/ml. 400 IU's will not do this unless you happen to be a lifeguard!

You will likely need more like 3800 to 5000 IU's of vitamin D a day to reach that number. That's almost 10 Times what you are thinking of taking right now!

So, do I think that taking 400 IU's is 'Safe'? I think that taking 400 IU's per day is pretty darn risky!
