Vitamin D and Bone Density...

I was just told that I have Vitamin D deficiency. I was told that my level was 12 when the range should be 20 to 100. I have read that this can cause weak bones, yet when I had my bone density test I was told it was great and that I would never have any problem.

Please help me understand.

Thank you.
Maria

Bone Density RIGH this minute...
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

Hi Maria,

Your bone density test is a snapshot of what your bones are doing right this minute. They do NOT tell you about the future. And Low Vitamin D levels ABSOLUTELY contribute to osteoporosis. There are also some who say that bone density tests are poor predictors of osteoporosis and that they should NOT be used as such.

So, having a 'good' bone density test:

1) Isn't necessarily accurate
2) Doesn't predict future bone density.

As an analogy, if a pack a day smoker came into the doctors office and got a chest X ray that was normal, it would be irresponsible for the doctor to say, "Well, you don't have lung cancer RIGHT NOW, so keep on smoking because this test says that you'll never get it."

That would be ridiculous wouldn't it? We KNOW that there are some people who NEVER get cancer despite smoking all of their lives, but smoking is a RISK FACTOR for lung cancer and a chest X ray does not PREDICT for lung cancer.

Well, some people are going to have low vitamin D levels and never get osteoporosis, but a low Vitamin D Level is a RISK FACTOR for osteoporosis and a good Bone Density Scan does not PREDICT for osteoporosis in the future.

So, continuing to have a quite low Vitamin D Level (the 'normal' is NOT 20 to 100- read the page on Normal Vitamin D Levels to see what IS normal) is playing Russian Roulette with your health. And also be sure to read the Vitamin D Deficiency Treatment page to see how your doctor SHOULD be treating your Low Vitamin D Levels.

Hope that this helped.
