Is Vitamin D 50,000 IU Safe?
Or is it Not Enough?

Is Vitamin D 50 000 IU a lot of vitamin d? Is that safe to even take? Or is that not even enough? Has it been given to you once a week, or once a day- that makes a difference. Well, you'll be happy to know that if you've been told to take this large dose of vitamin d, this is perfectly normal and entirely safe if you have been diagnosed with a Vitamin D Deficiency... but, there are a few things that you SHOULD be worried about that your doctor is simply not going to be including in his prescription for 50,000 IU's of vitamin D!

With governments telling people that the recommended daily amount of vitamin d is between 200 IU's to 800 IU's per day, a dose of Vitamin D 50,000 IU per week seems like a high dose vitamin d that might be so large that it would be unsafe, however many people have Vitamin D Levels so low that they may need to even take 50,000 IU's of vitamin d per DAY for a month or two in order to bring their vitamin d levels up to normal! Many many people get extremely concerned that they will have an Overdose on Vitamin D because of taking what seems to be such a large amount, but this is just simply of no concern if you are asked to take this large of an amount due to a diagnosed vitamin d deficiency, and you are getting regular vitamin d levels at intervals of approximately 3 months.

While taking Vitamin D 50 000 IU per DAY for long periods of time will lead to an eventual overdose, there NEVER been an overdose from taking 50 000 IU vitamin d per week and, for many people, this seemingly large 'high dose vitamin D' is actually a proper maintenance dose that they will need to take for, possibly, even the rest of their life! Humans actually need MUCH larger doses of vitamin d than was previously believed, and many people write me concerned because they have vitamin d deficiency despite taking as much as 2000 IU's of vitamin d per day for many years. But actually, that would be normal because we NEED much larger doses than 2000 IU's per day, and a dose that small would be a daily maintenance dose for a child of about 25 pounds- not for an adult.

Yipes! Don't Take that Prescription!

Vitamin D 50000 IU is Prescription Vitamin D and is not recommended

What IS cause for concern, however, is that if you were told to take Vitamin D 50 000 IU, you were probably given Prescription Vitamin D and THAT is what is not recommended. Prescription vitamin d is in the form of Vitamin D2 and vitamin d2 has many disadvantages over the recommended form of vitamin d. Please read the page on Vitamin D3 in order to understand why Vitamin D2 is far inferior to 'over the counter' vitamin d3 that you can get at a health food store.

If your doctor wrote you a prescription for vitamin d, you should think twice about taking it for another reason. High dose vitamin d, taken all at once, are not recommended for someone who is unsure how they will react to Vitamin D. Vitamin D Side Effects are rare, but those who are seriously deficient are at higher risk.

Avoid Side Effects with Cofactors

In addition, the other thing that you should know about taking Vitamin D 50 000 IU that your doctor will not tell you is that you absolutely need to be aware of the common problem of needing more Vitamin A, Vitamin K and magnesium when you take vitamin D. Reading the page on Magnesium and Vitamin D will be of particular importance before taking a regimen of 50,000 IU's of Vitamin D -and failure to be sufficient in these vitamin d 'cofactors' or failure to heed this warning about the need to be sufficient in vitamin d cofactors can cause a VARIETY of problems that people experience as Vitamin D Side Effects such as:

It's EXTREMELY important for you to understand that VITAMINS ARE NOT DRUGS- even if you get them in the form of a prescription- and nutrients require other nutrients in order to work properly. Vitamin deficiencies, too, rarely come completely isolated. While a doctor may tell you that you are deficient in vitamin d and nothing else, how does he know this when you've probably only been tested for just a very few nutrients.

Without testing your Vitamin A, Vitamin K and Magnesium Levels, how does someone know that you are not deficient? And from extensive experience, I can tell you that if you are moderately to severely deficient in Vitamin D to the extent that you need to be given Vitamin D 50 000 IU tablets to bring your levels up, then I can almost guarantee that you have one or more other vitamin deficiencies- and taking large doses of vitamin d alone will be a VERY bad idea.

A much better idea is to avoid these problems entirely and take a HIGH QUALITY Multivitamin and Mineral supplement, such as this Daily Vitamin Supplement while you are on the high dose vitamin D as 'insurance' against Vitamin D Side Effects that you might otherwise experience. I also advise against skimping on an inferior 'drug store' brand of vitamins- you'll get what you pay for. So, don't be afraid or worried about taking High Dose Vitamin D 50 000 IU if it's been recommended to you, it's extremely safe and you'll be warding off many of the Symptoms of Vitamin D Deficiency that can cause multiple health problems down the line.
