Too much vitamin D???

by Jen
(PA)

Just had a few questions in regards to Vitamin D. I am a grammar school nurse and we seem to have many children showing signs of the swine flu. I usually take 5000IU daily but increased to 10,000 IU for the past 10 days. I have done a lot of reading on the toxicity of too much vitamin d. I am a little nervous now. Was that too much to take?

Also, I have been giving my 10 yr old son(he's 100 pounds) 4000 iu/daily and my 4 yr old son 2000 IU/daily. Are these levels safe as well?
Any insight that you can offer would greatly be appreciated.....

Thanks so much.

Hi Jen,

More About Vitamin D

Nope, it seems like you are doing PERFECT. The 5000 IU's a day is the high end of the maintenance doses recommended on the Vitamin D Requirements page, and there has NEVER been a documented Overdose on Vitamin D taking 10,000 IU's per day or less- even for years at a time, so you are WELL within safe limits.

As for your kids, your oldest is 100 pounds.Dr. Mercola recommends 30 IU's per pound, so you are a touch above what he recommends, but Dr. Cannell of the Vitamin D Council recommends, "Children over the age of 1 year should take 1,000 IU per every 25 pounds of body weight per day, depending on latitude of residence, skin pigmentation, and sun exposure."

So, you are right on with that for both of them.

The only other thing that I would recommend is that you get a level this winter- for ALL of you just to make sure that you are taking enough!

And if you want to spare yourself and the kids a pill every day, you can simply take all of your weekly dose all at once. This weekly dose (monthly if you want to) is VERY safe and has been done repeatedly in clinical studies. Many studies even just gave one big dose every 3 months! So there is no reason to have to take a pill every day if its easier to, for instance, give your little guy 3 pills of 5000 IU's once a week than one 2000 IU pill once a day.
