Tested Positive for H pylori
by: Kerri Knox, Registered Nurse

Hi Serena,

First of all, you don't say if you were treated in the past. You only say that you tested positive and the doctor says that you will always test positive, but this makes no sense if you have never been tested and treated in the past.

Secondly, you do NOT always test positive after being treated for H pylori. You 'can' test positive on a BLOOD TEST for a long time after being treated for H pylori, so it's best to get an H Pylori Stool Test to make sure that you really do have H pylori currently and not just the antibodies for H pylori that are left over from treatment.

HOWEVER, I personally was positive for H pylori, got treated, and recently had a negative blood test. So, while it may take a while for the antibodies to disappear from your blood, you are 'not' always positive to antibodies in the blood. This is just an example of the ignorance of your doctor. In any case, if he believed this were true, why did he not do a stool test on you instead of just making some ignorant comment about always being positive that is most definitely not true.

Next, Prilosec does not kill H pylori, it can be an adjunct treatment, but it does not kill it. So, if you do have H pylori, you need to take a regiment that will kill the H pylori and not just reduce acid in your stomach, which can allow H pylori to flourish even more.

I encourage you to get my book The H Pylori Solution. Once you've read it, you'll almost certainly know more about H pylori and how to treat it than your doctor seems to know, since he doesn't seem to know very much in the first place. You'll be able to teach him about H pylori by the sounds of it.
