Yipes! Statins and Tendonitis!
by: Kerri Knox, RN-The Immune Health Queen!

Hi Terry,

I'm glad that you read about the magnesium and that you gave me some more 'clues' about your condition. First of all, the fact that you are taking a laxative regularly makes me believe even more strongly that you are magnesium deficient.

Magnesium STRONGLY controls peristalsis and that is one of the VERY EARLY signs of magnesium deficiency. If you remember that magnesium makes muscles RELAX and if the muscles that control peristalsis can't relax, then....

Also, the fact that you take statins COULD be a big problem in this equation. Joshua and I have been looking into the Levaquin Tendonitis issue in great depth and have come up with a couple of theories. One of those theories is that there is SOMETHING that predisposes certain people to Levaquin Tendonitis- and that thing MAY be Coenzyme Q10 Deficiency. You see, Coenzyme Q10 is absolutely essential for producing energy in every cell in the body- without it, you literally get the inability to make energy on a CELLULAR level- which could have a tremendous impact on cellular healing- such as occurs in Levaquin Tendonitis.

And what can cause a decrease in Coenzyme Q10 in the cells?

Statins!

The reason that statins work is because they block an enzyme that creates cholesterol. That same enzyme blocks the production of CoQ10 as well! Not so good.

So, while I absolutely think that magnesium could be beneficial to your condition, and I recommend that you read my Magnesium Dosage Page and follow the instructions there, I think that it would be EXTREMELY beneficial if you were to get the In-Home Urine Test that I use called The Organix Profile.

Not only does the Organix Profile test Coenzyme Q10 levels, something that EVERYONE on statins should have checked before and during statin therapy (in my opinion), but it also checks for your inability to detoxify chemicals and your antioxidant status- two OTHER reasons why you may have been predisposed to Levaquin Tendonitis in the first place and also what may be keeping you from fully healing.

So, if you really want to know what is going on in your body, The Organix Profile is what will tell you that.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

Additional comment on Terry's supplements
by: Michael

Terry,

I see that you are taking a 1000mg calcium supplement. That's just asking for magnesium deficiency.

Calcium should be taken at a maximum of 1:2 ratio to Magnesium (and usually it's not needed at all since calcium is quite omnipresent in water, leafy greens, nuts etc).

Taking that much calcium without a significant of magnesium *will* cause magnesium defficiency however.
