H pylori and weight gain.
by: Kerri Knox, RN, The Immune Queen

Yes, there does seem to be a relationship. Unfortunately, both HAVING H pylori AND eradicating it can lead to weight gain. So, don't expect eliminating H pylori to cure your weight loss, the effect of weight gain after eradication is well-known.

But remember, 1/2 the world has H pylori and most have no symptoms. And H pylori infection is higher in third-world countries where they have overall lower weight than in western countries where H pylori is less prevalent.

Also, you could have had H pylori for decades. So, your weight gain may or may not have anything at all to do with the H pylori. Most people with H pylori live with it just fine without any problems.

So, it would be debateable and impossible to determine whether your weight gain has anything to do with your H pylori infection. There are hundreds of reasons for weight gain.

So, for the science, the study Gherelin, H Pylori, and Body Mass, is there a connection? they say, "A meta-analysis of 18 observational studies including 10,000 subjects found a higher body mass index among H. pylori-positive
subjects compared with H. pylori-negative subjects"

So, unfortunately, EVEN IF your weight gain is due to H pylori infection, a theory impossible to prove, eradication is unlikely to be a weight loss help for you.

Sorry for the bad news.

I found that connection interesting because I was battling H pylori for a few years before the doctors could figure out what was actually happening to me.

Over those two years I was consistantly losing weight without ever changing any habits. Overall, I lost a total of 30 lbs. After testing positive for H pylori, and taking the prescribed medicine I eventually put all that weight back on.

Maybe it just effects others differently?

Weight gain

I recently took my 2nd round of antibiotics because the first round didn’t work. . I have weight gain bc of all the nauseas I eat a lot of carbs. Also before I knew I had this infection my stomach would make such loud noises as if I was starving so I was constantly eating . Now I know the noises are coming from stomach acids and not from hunger. . You have to wait 30 days after treatment to recheck for it. I believe I still have it. Keeping my fingers crossed since this is a never ending battle.
