Hmmm. Shouldn't Be Tired...
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

Hi Kim,

So, first of all, being tired is NOT a normal state. Just because 'most everyone in America' is tired, that doesn't make it 'normal' and in fact there are many really really good reasons why so many Americans feel tired that doctors just are not going to address.

One of them is, as you might have guessed, Gluten Sensitivity. Remember, historically, gluten has only been in the human diet for a couple hundred years- a blink in our evolution. And many many cultures had no access to it until the mid 1900's!!

Even though it's been called the 'Staff of Life', it's more like the 'Stuff of Illness and Fatigue'. If you think of what preschoolers make PASTE out of, it's essentially gluten and water. Every time that you are eating bread or pasta you are putting PASTE into your intestines! No wonder so many people are tired, constipated, malnourished and fat when they are eating paste every day and calling it 'Healthy'.

So yes, I think it's really worth it for you to go off of gluten for several months and see how you do.

Also, you should have your vitamin d level checked as fatigue is a Symptom of Vitamin D Deficiency- and it's EXTRAORDINARILY common- especially in northern states.

Next, I would HIGHLY recommend that you get a repeat Intestinal Pathogen Test for two reasons. First is that even if you were checked for H pylori after you finished treatment, if you read my page on Is H Pylori Contagious?, you'll see that unless the rest of your family was tested and treated, you could have just got it right back from someone who had no symptoms.

Next, most docs don't test for giardia again after treatment, but they often don't get it all and it's still there- likely since you've 'never felt right' since then. So, that's what I would recommend. If you still have H pylori and/or Giardia, going off gluten will likely help, but not solve your problems.
