Prenatal Supplement With D2

by Noelle Callahan
(birdsboro pennsylvania)

I have the Rainbow light prenatal vitamin and I am now nursing.

The vitamin d is in d2 form and I want to know if I need an additional supplement- it is 400iu's 100% (prenatal).

What are the symptoms of D deficiency?

Can you be deficient in either d2 or d3? Are there differences?

I wonder...
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

Hi Noelle,

So, 400 IU's is a PITIFUL amount of Vitamin D and if you read my page on Your Vitamin D Requirements, you'll see that the "100%" that that is in your Prenatal Vitamin SHOULD really say "10%" if they were following researcher recommendations instead of the RDA.

But they don't, so you get fooled into thinking that you are getting an adequate amount of vitamin D, when it is anything BUT adequate. So, if you are taking such a small amount, it is having so little health benefits anyway, that it doesn't really matter whether you are taking Vitamin D3 or Vitamin D2.

But, it makes me wonder, if the makers of your multivitamin are too cheap to put in D3, then where else are they skimping. So, I looked up their Vitamins and found that they are also using the cheapest magnesium (in the form of oxide) and calcium (in the form of carbonate) available. Neither of which is very absorbable. (However, I'm seeing that their prenatal vits have 800 IU's of Vitamin D3- better, but still not nearly enough).

So, unfortunately the Symptoms of Vitamin D Deficiency are extremely subtle and you may not notice them at all until you get diabetes, Cancer, Multiple Sclerosis, Chronic Pain or various other conditions that doctors are NOT going to relate to long term vitamin D deficiency- but that researchers ARE.

And unfortunately, the symptoms of Vitamin D deficiency in children are even MORE subtle, so find out why it's so important for Pregnant Mothers to Get their Vitamin D.

So, essentially, neither you nor your baby is getting enough vitamin d. So, you may want to consider ditching your cheapo multivitamins and get some High Quality Whole Food Multivitamins with 5000 IU's of Vitamin D and that should allow enough vitamin d in your breast milk to make supplementing the baby unnecessary.

You'll be doing the both of you a lifelong favor.
