Once you test positive for h pylori, will you always test positive?

by Mary
(Sacramento, CA)

I tested positive for h. pylori in July 2011 and began using natural supplements(mainly mastic gum) instead of antibiotics. I also changed to a plant based diet. Virtually all my symptoms disappeared. I tested again in September 2011 and my result was positive. My doctor says once you have it, you will always test positive. I don't understand how I could test positive when I felt I no had it. She recommended I go in for an Endoscopy for information as to what is going on with my digestive system. I am reluctant to have this test since I am feeling so much better. I no longer have constant fatigue or pain. Should I have a Endoscopy?

Your doctor doesn't know what he's talking about
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

Hi Mary,

Your doctor doesn't know what he's talking about. You do NOT always test positive once you've had it. The DEFINITION of H pylori being gone is that you don't test positive for it anymore.

However, in your case you should not have taken the test so soon after treatment. If you have truly eradicated the H pylori, it will take several months to test negative because the antibodies are still in your system for a while after treatment.

Either wait several more months and get another blood test, or you can do an H pylori stool test at any time. The antigen to H pylori that shows up in your stool leaves your body much quicker than the antibodies in your blood do.
