Not enough...
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

Hi Joyce,

With a vitamin d level of 6, 5000 IU's per day is just not going to be enough. 5000 IU's is a maintenance dose for an adult and not a 'treatment' dose.

Please read my page on Vitamin D Deficiency Treatment to see that you'll need at least 7000 IU's per day (50,000 IU's per week). But with a level of 6, that's not going to be likely to be enough either, and on that page you'll see that you can safely take up to 10,000 IU's a day for treatment with retesting in 2 to 3 months.

And please consider also taking magnesium. Please read my page on Magnesium and Vitamin D to see why this is the case.

Thank you so much for your time. I did read about the magnesium here so I bought some epsom salt and started soaking my feet for 20 minutes, also I drink cranberry juice and it says it has magnesium in it.

I have been eating a lot of food that says it has vitamin D in it and drinking milk, its fall here right now so I was thinking about going to a tanning salon to help during the winter months. Should I do all that or should I go and buy 2000 iu Vitamin D to take with the 5000 ui instead?

Thank you.

Epsom Salt is Perfect...
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

Hi Joyce,

The epsom salt soaks are a great way to get your magnesium. But don't worry about trying to eat foods with vitamin d unless you are getting wild caught fatty fish. The amount of vitamin d in anything else is going to simply be negligible, and milk is just really not a food that is great for you anyway unless it's raw and organic from grass fed cows.

Take a look at the Campaign for Real Milk. In any case, getting your Vitamin d in milk is the same as taking supplements since it's fortified with supplements and doesn't occur naturally in the milk. Fatty, wild caught fish is really the only good food source of Vitamin D.

And drinking cranberry juice for magnesium isn't such a great idea either unless the cranberry juice is sugar free, and you're not likely to be drinking it if it were because it's so tart.

I'm not a big fan of commercial tanning beds either because many of them can cause skin damage, produce harmful EMF's and not all of them produce vitamin d anyway. So you'll have to do your research carefully.

So, you can always just take 2 vitamin d capsules a day until you get your next level. That's likely the easiest and fastest way to get your level up quickly. Remember, your level is VERY low, so it's going to take a lot to bring it up.

Yes my cranberry juice is sugar free, I tend to not like sugar very much. (I can drink vinegar straight LOL) Ok, I will take 2 vitamin D's and not count the food. Don't like fish but do eat tuna from time to time, not sure if that's fatty or not.

Once again.

Thank you for your time.

low vitamin D
by: Anonymous

My doctor prescribed me 50,000 mg of Vitimin D for 6 weeks. I thought it was a bit overkill until I realized it was a weekly dosage. After that I was advised to take 4000 Mg a day. It pays to get annual check ups at the doctor. I would have never known if I had not gone for a regular check up. I was feeling fine too.

Vitamin D3 level = 7, D2 level =6
by: Anonymous

Hi,

I had an annual check up and my vitamin d3 level was 7nmol/l and d2 level was 6nmol/l. My doctor prescribed me 800 IU a day, is that low and should I go back to ask why I haven't been given a higher dosage? The articles and comments I've read seem to suggest that the dosage should be much higher...

Thank you!

I Probably Have Over a 1000 pages on the right dosage on this site
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

Hi NO NAME,

I'm sure that I have written at least 1000 pages on this site on the correct dosage to take (and it's not 800 IU's per day). Please read my page on Vitamin D Therapy and follow the instructions there.

You can certainly go back to your doctor and argue with him about how much vitamin d is necessary, but if he gave you 800 IU's a day to take, then he has no clue how much vitamin D is required- and all your arguing might talk him into recommending a 'radical' (to him) dosage like 2000 IU's per day- which will still be 1/4 to 1/10 as much as you'll need to take to bring your levels up to optimal.

He will also not tell you about the 'cofactors' that you will need to take in order to reduce the chance of common problems. So, it's certainly up to you if you want to discuss this with your doctor, just don't be surprised if you end up walking out of the office angry, frustrated and with a recommendation for no higher of a dose than he's already giving you.

But maybe there IS a reason why he's unwilling to give you more (maybe you have had a kidney transplant and you could die if your immune system is enhanced! there is no way for me to know that from your post), so please speak to your doctor.
