My doctor said my level is at 22. How much D3 should I take? He prescribed D2.

My doctor prescribed D2 for my lower level of Vitamin D. After browsing your site I realize I should take D3, however, I don't know how much I should take a day. Is there a program that you recommend taking a large amount at first and then tapering off? I'm not sure how much I need to be taking to get my levels back up and then once I get retested what I.U.'s to take to keep them there.

Thank you!
Suzanne

Why MDs Prescribe D2?
by: Arnie

What in the world is going on with MDs prescribing D2? Do you have any insight on this?

When you have a hammer..
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

Hi Arnie,

When the only tool that you have is a hammer, then everything looks like a nail. Well, most doctor's only tool is a prescription pad, so everything needs a prescription- and D2 is the only prescription vitamin d that there is. In turn, insurance companies don't reimburse or pay for non-prescription drugs and so if doctors didn't write a prescription for it, many people would be screaming that their insurance company wouldn't pay for what their doctor recommended. So, as long as we totally rely on doctors and insurance companies for our 'health care' then unfortunately, this is what we get.

Health 'insurance' was never meant to be a 'health plan', yet that's what it's turned into. Before insurance, you paid for what you thought was the right health care for you, but now we've come to rely on 'health insurance' for our 'health plan' and doctors are dictated exactly what will and won't be paid for by third party people with no direct knowledge of the exact situation and are not in a position to change their policies quickly as new research becomes available.

So, we've entrenched ourselves into a system that doesn't necessarily act in our best interest. Not a great way to have a health care system.
