Is it safe to be near a newborn if being treated for Hpylori?

My daughter is due to have her baby this week. I was just diagnosed (through Upper Endoscopy) with Hpylori and plan on starting the Prevpak (or generic recipe) tomorrow.

How soon can I visit them to spend 1-2 weeks to help out? It's tearing me up that I probably shouldn't go right away!
Name: Lyn

Thank you!

Risk vs benefit

So, tens of thousands of women are H pylori positive when they have their babies. H pylori is a fact of life that one cannot avoid. And your daughter might even have H pylori right now! Just because she does not have symptoms does not mean that she does not have H pylori. Millions of people who have it do not have symptoms. And if you have it, your daughter may very well have it.

That being said, there is an association between infants having H pylori and SIDS as outlined in this study entitled An association between sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and Helicobacter pylori infection.

So, should you stay away? I don't know the answer to that. But if you do decide to stay away because you have H pylori. Then you need to be logically consistent and stay away until you test negative for H pylori.

That means that you:

1) Get treated
2) Wait one month
3) Get retested with a stool sample or breath test
4) Get a confirmation that the results are negative.

You should probably also have your husband or anyone you've had close contact with tested as well, because they have been exposed by you too.
