Institute of Medicine planning on revising Vitamin D recommendations- in 2010

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) is planning on reviewing the literature that is now present regarding Vitamin D "with a view of revising their recommendations upward".

Their review is due out in the Spring of 2010.

So, we have another year and a half before anyone in the medical model actually recognizes that most Americans are severely Vitamin D deficient.

And if the past is going to be anything like the future, they will likely recommend some randomly chosen higher dosage that may even be double or triple the current recommendations, but that are still inadequate.

I for one am taking matters into my own hands and take a much higher daily dosage of Vitamin D. A dosage that is recommended by dozens of pHD level researchers and medical doctors who have done extensive research on the importance of Vitamin D and your health.

Be proactive and do your own research on Vitamin d in order to see how important this Vitamin/Hormone is to your overall health. Don't let a year and a half go by with Vitamin D deficiency only to develop cancer or heart disease as a result of the government's and your doctor's slow response to current research

New Breast Cancer Research Shows that we are all just Guinea Pigs in one great experiment....

This new study here http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081213/ap_on_he_me/med_breast_cancer_hormones

proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that taking hormones for over 5 years doubles your risk of breast cancer.

Sad news for those women who trusted their doctor to provide them with safe and effective relief of menopausal symptoms.

I'm previously talked about the link between breast cancer and Vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D deficiency being an a yet to be recognized serious health epidemic- also brought about by the medical community's recommendations to avoid the sun without replacing the essential vitamin that we get from the sun.

We, who rely on our doctors to give us the best advice are really just guinea pigs in a great experiment.

These same doctors claim to only recommend medical treatments based on evidence- yet there is, nor was there ever 'evidence' that hormonal replacement therapy was safe. And neither is there evidence that avoiding the sun is safer than conscious moderate exposure.

That is little consolation for the women here in Marin County, California- just on the northern side of the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco.

With one of the highest breast cancer rates in the country, it has long been a conundrum as to why this is. With Marin County's affluence, the vast majority of these women have excellent health insurance, exercise reasonably and eat right.

In fact, at the yoga studio that I used to belong to, no less than THREE yoga instructors there were fighting breast cancer!!

So, while this study doesn't conclusively point to how the breast cancer epidemic began and how it can be conquered, it does tell us one thing...

That our doctors don't know much more than we do.

If there is one thing that I have learned in the 14 years that I have been involved in Western Medicine, it is that you must think critically before accepting ANY treatment that your doctor recommends for you.

YOU are the only one that can be responsible for your health- don't give up that power to anyone.... not even your doctor.

Cold Medicines for Children

Did you know that an advisory panel of scientists and doctors advised the FDA to recommend that over the counter cough and cold medicines should NOT be used for children under 6 years old?

It's true. They determined that their is no scientific evidence of their effectiveness and that their effectiveness on children was "assumed" because of studies done on adults.

The FDA, in its infinite wisdom, recommended that these medications not be given to children under 2!

The 'evidence' for THIS recommendation was borne simply out of thin air and not science.

So, while their is ZERO evidence that cough and cold medicines work for children and there is ZERO safety data on them, doctors continue to recommend them to parents while claiming that everything that they do has a scientific basis to it.

Just another reason to make sure that you do your OWN research when it comes to the health of yourself and your children.

Raw food a health hazard?

I was at a health food store today that happens to serve some raw food dishes. I noticed that there was a sign that said, "Warning, Eating Raw Food Regularly May be Hazardous to Your Health".

So, we don't need a warning on packages of chips, oreos or sodas, but healthy food in its natural state that people have been eating for thousands of years need warning labels!

Pediatricians call to raise Vitamin D dosage

The American Academy of Pediatrics officially is doubling its recommended dosage of Vitamin D - from 200 IU's to 400 IU's.

These doctors must NOT read!! 400 IU's is an EQUALLY worthless dose of Vitamin D, even for children, as is 400 IU's.

All the research on Vitamin D points to raising the requirement to 1000-2000 IU's per day.

There is NO science behind their recommendation. It is an ARBITRARY number that they pulled out of thin air.

Here's an analogy. Lets say we are in the desert and I'm in charge of rationing water and I choose to give you one ounce of water per day. Do you think that it will change anything if I arbitrarily decide to give you double or even triple that amount of water every day.

NO!! It's still not enough to meet your needs even though I tripled the dose. A double dose of Vitamin D STILL will not meet children's minimum requirements.

Melamine and the Chinese Scandal

While the melamine in the baby formula in China is tragic, it highlights the fact that that the Chinese suppliers didn't just go out and buy a chemical to replace the protein in the milk.

Unfortunately, melamine is an ACCEPTABLE additive to dairy products, not a fluke.

Here in the US, melamine has a "upper tolerable limit" of 0.65 mg per kilogram per day. As a nurse, I find it interesting that the limit is written as a drug dosage would be.

What IS an acceptable upper limit and how was is it established for a chemical? Who decided that this could be done and why aren't we told?

This is is just another example of how our government is NOT looking out for our best interests.

Very sad outcome for allowing companies to add unnatural and dangerous chemicals to our foods.

Vitamin D linked to decreased all cause Mortality

While still needing more research to confirm this, higher vitamin D levels are being linked to decreased all cause mortality, a label given to VERY few things.

In fact, the only other things that get this coveted label are:

1)Undereating. Yep, cultures that eat lightly live the longest.

2)Exercise

3)Fish oils

That's it. As much as pharmaceutical companies would like you to believe that their cholesterol lowering statins reduce all cause mortality, they don't.

If you want to live a long time, eat lightly, get regular exercise, get Omega 3 fatty acids and be sure to get enough Vitamin D!!

Fish Oils do it again - this time they prevent blindness

I can't say enough about the beneficial effects of fish oils which contain Omega 3 fatty acids.

From heart disease to blood pressure to blindness, don't underestimate the beneficial health effects that fish oil can have.

In times past, we ate Omega 3 fatty acids every day, but processed foods have changed all that. Omega 3's have been removed from most of our foods and most westerners have severe deficiency.

The easiest way to correct this is to add fish oil to your diet. One to two grams per day is all you need to go a long way towards better health.

Fish Oil More and More Important all the time

The Journal of the American College of Cardiology reported a comparison of blood omega-3 levels and atherosclerosis among Japanese, white American and Japanese American men. Japanese men had the lowest levels of atherosclerosis and two times higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids than white Americans or Japanese Americans.

The study, adds to an established body of science supporting the cardiovascular benefits of omega-3 fatty acids.

If you haven't already added fish oils to your diet, you are missing out on some potent health benefits. Studies on fish oils show it can reduce blood pressure as much as many medications and can reduce cholesterol equivalent to statins. It has potent immune benefits and provides essential fatty acids that most Westerners are severely deficient in.
