I'm So Confused about Vitamin D ...

by Rhonda
(Cincinnati)

I am so confused. I have had chonic pain since 2006 when I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Even though my family doctors (3 since 2000) checked my thyroid regularly, I was always told it was normal. Then in 2008 an Allergist did some extensive bloodwork and found an extremely high amount of thyroid antibodies and I was subsequently also diagnosed with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis.

I was already experiencing hypothyroid symptoms. I hooked up with an Endocrinologist who explained that my thyroid levels were not normal and that the average family practice doctor falsely believes test results of 4.0 to 6.0 are normal. She said my thyroid was about 75% non functional and I am on .88mcg synthroid. The problem is, two years later, I still have no energy, have exercise intolerance, and am only pain free while lying down.

Vitamin D Spray for Immune Health

A few months ago , my Endocrinologist tested my Vitamin D level and stated it was very low. I am on D3, 2500 iu's per day. Have you found any correlation with Vitamin D deficiency and Fibromyalgia and/or Hypothyroidism.
How long will it take to feel better while on the D3 supplement?

That's why I'm doing this site...

Hi Rhonda,

Your confusion and your doctor's ineptness and inability to help you is the reason that I am doing this website. After 15 years of nursing (I'm a slow learner), I realized that doctors just simply can't help people with chronic health problems, they are just not taught anything but drugs and surgery and apparently don't read any research outside of what is given to them because everything that is on my site is documented with peer reviewed research studies.

So, I'm sorry to hear that it took them so long to diagnose your thyroid issues. I suggest that you subscribe to the About.com Thyroid Newsletter. The moderator, Mary Shamon, is simply a thyroid sufferer like you. However, she spent so much time and effort researching her own thyroid issues that she is now the default 'expert' on thyroid issues- to the point that she can debate with doctors and get websites such as WebMd and other 'expert' sites to change their content when she refutes what they have to say!

It's a shame that doctors don't know anything about thyroid problems besides

High TSH=Synthroid

Anything more subtle and they are clueless. And in fact having the best doctors in the world doesn't do you any good on this issue either. Hashimoto's is likely why Oprah has suffered all these years with fatigue and on and off weight gain and loss. And she has all the money in the world and Dr. Oz as her personal physician!

Yet Mary Shalon could have diagnosed Oprah in a heartbeat!

Oprah was also diagnosed with Vitamin D deficiency after many years (duh! African american, works indoors, lives in Chicago.). Yet despite the 'obvious', she wasn't diagnosed for many years either. And while I don't know how much vitamin d she was told to take, like you, I suspect is completely inadequate.

So, despite your endo knowing a few things about thyroid, he's clueless about Vitamin D. The dose that you are taking is a MAINTENANCE DOSE for a 5 year old- NOT a treatment dose for an adult. So, you need to read the page on Vitamin D Deficiency Treatment and you'll see the 'standard of care' for treatment is 50,000 IU's per week- which is over 7000 IU's per day- not 2500 IU's per day that your doctor just made up in his head. There is NO RESEARCH recommending 2500 IU's per day for deficiency treatment.

Then you need to make sure that you read the page on optimal Vitamin D Levels so that your get your levels up higher than your doctor is likely to think that you need!

While that will be likely to help your energy levels somewhat, having Fibromyalgia is a complex syndrome and so I'd like you to...

to read a few more things so that you understand better about what a 'junk' diagnosis Fibromyalgia is. It is meaningless and just means that 'we don't know what's wrong with you. You have these symptoms that a lot of other people have too and so we're going to call that Fibromyalgia."

It's a cop-out that gives them license to ignore your problems as real. Read about what doctors DON'T look for when they say that you have 'Fibromyalgia' in my post called Fibromyalgia...Syndrome or Disease?.

And I'd also like you to read Sharon's experience, a fibromyalgia sufferer too, when she simply started taking Magnesium. It's in this post called Vitamin D Deficiency and Fibromyalgia

So, while I'm so sorry that you have had to go through all of this, you really do have options and it's seriously criminal that your doctors just don't know or don't care about this information. Keep on coming back to my site and keep learning. Fibromyalgia is NOT a lifelong curse, you can feel like a normal human again.

Decrease Inflammation for Better Immune System Health

Tired of being tired
by: Vera

I was diagnosed several years ago after gaining 50 lbs in 6 weeks with Hashimoto Hypothyroidism. I was put on synthroid .88mcg for over a year. I now am on no meds for my thyroid. Although test are done regularly to check my thyroid levels, I am only told my thyroid does not make enough antibodies to fight off infections.

Here I am several years later, and still no energy. Two weeks ago my Dr decided to run more blood work and found I had a Vitamin D Deficiency.

I am now on 50,000 iu's once a week and also on B12 injections once a month.

Is it possible for my Thyroid to go out and then go back to normal. I am in my 50's and still can't seem to get the extra 50 lbs I put on to go away. My weight bounces back and forth within 10 lbs. I am a vegetarian.

I am just tired of being tired. Is there any real help.

This is pretty complex stuff...
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

Hi Vera,

Yipes! That is really a lot of questions all at once. I'll start with the vitamin d deficiency.

So, I'm assuming that your doctor is giving you a prescription for your vitamin d? If so, then you need to read my page on Prescription Vitamin D so that you know why you should NOT be taking that prescription!

Then read the page on Vitamin D Therapy so that you have a step by step guide to follow to get your level up to where it should be.

Next, your Vitamin B12 Deficiency. So, please read my page on Vitamin B12 Shot Problems to see why it's completely unnecessary, painful and a waste of money to be getting a shot of Vitamin B12 once a month.

A better choice is to just take Sublingual Vitamin B12 Supplements by following the directions on the Vitamin B12 Deficiency Treatment page.

Doctors want to give shots because people say that they feel better when they get shots, but if they were to just take a higher dosage of Methylcobalamin B12 every day (up to 20 milligrams (NOT micrograms) instead of the 1 mg per day that they usually recommend.

Your weight. If you gained 50 pounds in 6 weeks and your weight fluctuates up to 10 pounds at a time and you are a vegetarian- it's EXTREMELY likely that part of your weight issue is simply water weight (edema).

And simply getting more high quality protein can help to remedy that. I recommend that you get a couple of protein shakes in every day- preferably using High Quality Protein Powder.

I have a few more ideas about why you could be tired if you are interested in hearing more...
