Hi Tricia,

It certainly sounds like you've been doing your homework. So, vitamin d for kids goes by weight and you can determine their needs by this formula from Dr. Cannell of the vitamin d council. He says,

"Children over the age of 1 year should take 1,000 IU per every 25 pounds of body weight per day, depending on latitude of residence, skin pigmentation, and sun exposure. On the days they are outside in the summer sun, they do not need to take any; in the winter they will need to supplement accordingly."

So, you are probably pretty darned close! And the kids can take Vitamin D3 Gummies for Kids

For you, really the best and only way to know if you are getting enough (and this is especially important since you have had cancer) is to get a level drawn and go from there. You want to get and to keep your levels within the 'Optimal' Vitamin D Blood Level range.

So, while 5000 IU's is 'generally' able to meet most people's Vitamin D Requirements, you'll just never know if that is true of you unless you get tested- and if its possible for you to get the kids tested, then all the better too!
