How much D3 to take?

by Kimberley
(Toronto, ON Canada)

I've been dealing with a vit d deficiency for over 1.5 years. Last year's measurement was 62 and this past august, my bloodwork showed it had dropped to 46. Despite taking between 7500 and 10000 IU per day (in liquid drop form).

My doctor wants me to cut back, worried that I will become toxic. I've been to an endocronologist and she suggested I take between 2-3000 IUs per day - that was last January.

Clearly I am not absorbing the vit d in the higher quantities and so I question the docs' opinion to take less. Furthermore, I am now suffering all kinds of strange muscle and bone aches and now my gums are sore all of the time. I'm really growing worried.

How much is too much and what can I take daily before risking toxicity?

Becoming Toxic
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

Hi Kimberly,

First of all, I want to make sure the units that your lab tests are using. Here in the US, we use ng/ml (nanograms/ml) and if you are using these units then your levels are actually right on, but if you are using nmol/L, like I think you might be, then you are definitely low.

So, please let me know what units you are using because it makes a BIG difference.

Next, your BLOOD LEVEL is what determines toxicity of Vitamin D, so if your blood levels are low, then you Can't be toxic! So, your doctors are CRAZY!

There are people that have taken 10,000 IU's a day for YEARS and have been fine. In fact, researchers want to change the official 'Safe Upper Limit' dose of Vitamin D to 10,000 IU's per day because there has NEVER EVER been a reported toxicity of Vitamin D in people taking 10,000 IU's per day or less. So, you are 100% Completely Safe continuing that dose.

Let me know about the units you are using, though, because that will determine anything else that I tell you.
